My first thought was "Passage to Marsailles" and I checked those lobby cards and it wasn't that. I thought that Passage to Marsailles was one of the better Bogart WWII movies (having most of his usual co-stars).
But I remembered starting Action in the North Atlantic back in my "see every Bogart movie" phase half a century ago and not wanting to finish it. So for me it wasn't a classic, but I guess for Turner Classic Movies it is!
And you are 100% correct. Limiting this to "true" classics wouldn't work! Kind of like most "Halls of Fame". They don't want a few dozen members, so they end up with hundreds of members, and the original meaning is really watered down.

I love The Piano! But I can understand why its a hard slog for some. But in general I agree, one persons classic, not so much for the next one. Many films considered classics I just dont get!
C308 is On the Waterfront. I don't know that this is ANY image from this I would not instantly recognize!

Correct. On The Waterfront from 1954, and well spotted Bruce.
Being a very well known film I attempted to include an image the least recognisable that I could locate, yet still including two of the stars of the film in the image,, therefore making it possible to answer.
C309 - Apocalypse Now? My first thought was Southern Comfort
Two good thoughts regarding the film's identity. but unfortunately neither are correct.
A clue then appears won't go astray. A friendship formed in a difficult hostile environment hopefully will provide the correct answer. A bonus clue is that the film was remade over forty years later.
Yes indeed C309 is Papillon from 1973. The film was based on a true story. Best actor Oscar winners Dustin Hoffman and Rami Malek both played the real life Louis Dega in the original and the 2017 remake.
I auctioned the above two stills and the consignor of them told me this:
"these two stills are from the sequence in the movie where Tippi Hedren, with her hair supposedly "dyed black", but actually wearing a dark wig, is preparing to steal a lot of money. When this sequence appears in the movie, you only see her from behind, so that you don't know for sure whether Hedren's character has really stolen the money, which adds a lot to the movie.
But the person preparing stills did not know this, and they included these two, which clearly show Hedren's face from that sequence, completely killing the suspense in the movie! We don't know if these images actually made it to theaters, or if this mistake was caught in time! Our consignor purchased these over 40 years ago, and they are the only such stills he has ever seen, so they would seem to be incredibly rare!"

Correct. Marnie from 1964. Interesting inrormation Bruce.

It is funny. I was pretty sure it was Mariette Hartley, and being on a horse meant surely RTHC (or GITA) but I didn't want to be wrong again, and I looked and looked and could not find that image anywhere (and for most of the movie she had bangs over her forehead).
Incidentally, if any of you want to see a GREAT western, watch this! It is the prescence of Scott and McCrea that make the movie, but be warned it has some really brutal moments (it IS Sam Peckinpah). The only not so good part is the prescence of Ron Starr who was a TV actor who got his big break in this movie, but was a total stiff, and had no career afterwards. It should have been James Caan or someone like that. And Mariette Hartley was excellent, and she could have had a better career than she did.

I cannot comment on Action In The North Atlantic as I have never seen it myself, but there are bound to me people out there that most likely love it.
Perhaps this thread should be renamed A Do You Know Your True Classic And Pretenders Classic Movies Quiz.

Another clue for C309 is that two Oscar winners played the same role in both this film and the later remake.
And yes, the clues were what did it for me
