I have seen this film and I deserves all the acclaim that it received.

Correct. It is indeed the earlier 1956 version of 1984.

For anyone that may not know the film had two different endings filmed and released with different endings. The U.K. version ends with an execution scene, while the U.S. version is more faithful to Orwell's book with brainwashing having taken place.

I have actually seen both versions, From memory both endings were effective.

Neither film answers are correct. A clue is perhaps in the style of telephone.
