Nerdy, self-absorbed, isolated, constantly preoccupied and fully entertained collector and dealer in Arabic and Persian movie posters, as well as a few other varieties.  Started my website in 1993, when I barely understood html basics.  Website now has about 16000 items.  Going through piles of posters for unknown films every day, usually manage to post data about one or two posters in a day's work, which includes watching the films on YouTube, researching the cast and crew and translating a Persian or Arabic summary of the film plot as found on the web.   This is slow going; most people don't care about this stuff, but I keep learning and accumulating anyway. Once in a while somebody turns up out of the blue who thinks what I'm doing is interesting.  When that happens I have a nice conversation and get a chance to learn something worth knowing from a new friend--the lonely, uneventful doings of a scavenger of esoterica.  The FreeBSD OS is my best friend, even though I don't understand it very well.
  • Welcome John - look forward to seeing paper from those regions, can't say I know too much about it, so look forward to being enlightened.

This is a good place to start, begin your own thread and share your special pieces here: http://vintagemoviepostersforum.com/categories/your-collection

  • Welcome John, sounds like you'll fit in here just fine.

  • Hello Everyone,
I've been collecting for about 13 years. About 10 years ago, I was a member of one movie poster forum but I don't remember which. Since that time, I had to sell my house with its beautiful media room where I had my favorite posters displayed. Now, in an apartment, I don't have room to display as many posters. So, I'm kind of in selling mode.

Like many collectors, my favorite posters are the ones I can't afford, like the beautiful half sheet (I think) of the 1956 "Invasion of the body Snatchers." (The one with the dancers in the background.) Another one I could never afford was a one sheet of "Rebel Without a Cause." I can't complain, though, as I have a beautiful collection of posters from Douglas Sirk films. I once had a Douglas Sirk wall, with a combination of one sheets and framed lobby cards. I still have a large number of posters that are being stored. I really need to do a methodical inventory. I also have a number of original "Star Wars" posters and a rare "Revenge of the Jedi" in C-10 condition. (The dated one, not the ultra rare one without a date.)

I used to be able to spot fake "Star Wars" posters but have ben away from the hobby for so long that I would have to study the material again.

For what its worth, here are my thoughts about the changes of movie poster valuation in the 13 years I've been away: I was somewhat surprised when a dealer told me that "Star Wars" posters are quite common and have not increased that much in value. He told me that many young collectors are unfamiliar with the first film and that he had a surplus of originals. Back in the day, there seemed to be a "Star Wars" poster mania. I'm also surprised at the huge increase in the value of French posters. (Yes, I should have bought more of them when they were cheaper.) I remember a French dealer, (A really nice guy.) who would give forum members first dibs on his posters. (I regret not buying an original "Le Mepres" when it was affordable.) I'm not surprised that horror film posters have continued their meteoric increase in value. I'm also gratified and surprised at the huge increase in value of certain foreign posters. My general observation is that the new generation of poster collectors have become more knowledgeable about great foreign films and the original posters. I view this as a positive change. Years ago, it seemed like most foreign film posters sold at a discount to American posters.

In my absence from the poster scene, I became a collector of vintage audio equipment and rare records: Mostly jazz and classical.

Some recollections: I remember a really nice guy who was a fanatical James Bond poster collector. We had a mutual interest in Jerry Lewis posters and some great discussions. Anyway, this is already too long. I apologize for its length and thank anyone who finds my story somewhat interesting.
  • Welcome back! The forum you reference exploded around a decade ago, and sadly, its website was taken down.

The collector you are talking about is Tom Pennock. He is still a collector, but not active on forums.

The info you got on poster values is not all that accurate. The very best Star Wars posters have exploded in price. You can see 1,314,934 accurate auction results here (any that were not paid for were deleted): http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/archive.html

Some prices are up, some are down, some have gone sideways, and some are all over the place!

  • Welcome Gagelle

I am sure you will notice many changes to the landscape as you look around, prices no doubt one of them. I might be intresting to know which 'cult' posters you knew of back then and whether they have stood the test of time.

Anyways, lots of people swing by this place so if you are looking to unload a few pieces you can list 'em, show 'em and price 'em here: http://vintagemoviepostersforum.com/categories/for-sale-non-dealer-section
  • Thanks David. I really appreciate that link. I have to do a complete inventory. When I sold my home, I put many posters in boxes. I know it was stupid not to put some of the older, folded ones on an archival backing. But my most valuable posters were framed by Susan of "Hollywood Poster Frames."

But first things first. I should get a photo and then spend some time figuring out which forums are appropriate for showing my posters.

Sue's frames allow the posters to be removed do they not?

Yep photos and prices (and condition) would help...as to which forum, well this one would be the best(!), you can save yourself time when posting here by simply sharing the post here directly into the FB groups (we have many people there who follow us here).

But truth be told - why choose which? Just post everywhere!

Thanks Charlie for deleting my account...  although, I was just asking how to proceed in case I wanted to delete my account, I didn't specifically ask for my account to be deleted ???

Anyway, I am sure it is again because English is not my primary language and I missed the end dots after "thanks".  Isn't sarcasm lovely ?

I am happy to see David got his stuff back... as I said, he had everything in his hands to get either his package or his money back.  May be I am too stupid to understand things but his all story was very confusing.  Only the defamation part was pretty clear to me :) but then you can argue it is cultural thing (French people have a big problem with delation; following the WWII, defamation is considered as very bad and an act of ill will).

I came back for the big story. Happy ending.

So now, yes Charlie, I kindly request you to delete my account.

    Thank you !

  • Hi all. Just joined the forum. Been collecting posters for a good while now so looking forward to some insight.
  • Welcome welcome welcome.
  • Welcome and looking forward to see some of your gems and genres.
  • Welcome!
  • Welcome Flipster!
  • Yes, welcome to the forum, looking forward to seeing what you so far...
  • Hi all, let me start my holding my hand up and saying that I've recently moved into dealing after over 20 years collecting, however I haven't joined this group to 'plug my wares' as it were, but to actually discuss my hobby and in many ways passion with like minded collectorhollics!  B)

like many of us I was lead into my hobby by my father who was an addict of post war British cinema, particularly anything with John Mills, Jack Hawkins, Richard Todd... the list goes on (likely responsible for him joining the Paratroopers in '56 and no doubt myself in '91).

My 17 or so years in the military allowed me to hunt out unusual pieces whilst posted in the four corners of the globe. So all those years of pounding the parade square was worth it in some small way!

Between the British Army and NZDF I was a film Armourer for four years working at great studios such as Pinwood and Elstree etc.. instructing actors (including the odd diva) on using firearms on camera then controlling the scenes as the cameras rolled, sometimes fortunate enough to appear infront of the lens myself. This also gave me the opportunity to search through the back stages for old posters long since forgotten.

As as you may have guessed my main focus was vwar themes, however over the years this has morphed into Star Wars, Crime and the odd western.

I look forward to learning a few things on this site and hope to provide information of some use to others  =)

    Cheers, Wil
  • Welcome Wil!

Looking forward to hearing your collecting yarns, and absolutely looking forward to seeing what you have managed to grab from the 'four corners of the globe'.

  • Hi David,

Thanks for the welcome, to be honest I launched my website a couple of weeks ago, so am manically burning my way through my double ups and resale items to add to the inventory/photo/resize/upload and list... currently needing a sleep, only I've got a 6 month to clear the Lobby Card backlog.

When I got posted from Germany to Africa I sent most of my own collection home for my parents in the U.K to keep safe and intend to collect some of it in person on my next trip home next year.

I've got a couple of lovely Reach For The Sky and Above Us The Waves quads that I very much need to get re-equated with!

    i'll keep you posted.
  • Welcome Wil,  Always good to get another Brit on here. Sounds Like your Dad has great taste..
