Is the text of "...Remember he's on your side" (and don't get me started on the punctuation of that line!), Is it overprinted with white ink, or is it the absence of blue ink that creates the text? If it's white ink then it may have been added in a separate pass and been slightly misaligned during a second pass through the printer (but still doesn't answer other differences).

Its not overprinted. If you compare the cloud at the top left on both posters, you can see where that is slightly cropped on the shorter version. So, about one inch has been cropped leaving the "...Remember he's on your side" text closer to the top heading text. They are two different printings.
As Rick previously stated, fascinating. One other thing that I noticed is that the blue colour gap section between the top tip of the R inclosed triangle and the black section above is ever so slightly different in size on each of the posters.

Not really, There are no other recorded examples of the Mad Max Blue Matte 26 3/4 daybill that I can find. Most of the daybills in that thread have slight differences in text or distribution details, etc eg Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Well - I was hoping for a cache of original printing work orders finally solving the purple, orange, mauve theories.
Interesting findings though.
Could we be missing a rerelease between the original and 81 rerelease.
Questions:
Were there enough theaters in Australia to print these in two locations?
Does the New Zealand distribution have any role in this. One printed in Australia and one in New Zealand?
When did MAPS switch to smaller daybills - could this be an interim release.
Could one of these be a bootleg? Do we have any 30x views of the print matrix to compare and see if the came from same machine. I would image MAPS would have had similar machines across the company.
I think the shorter poster is a reproduction or restrike.
It has to use everything from the first poster and there is nothing new. Even the background image is fuzzy - like it was photographed.
The sky is trimmed and Mel is squished.
The original title appears to have been cut from the original with a razor blade. The original has a more rounded left corner and the steering wheel highlights are different. Title block is much sharper too.

As I said in the Blog, there are some things about Mad Max posters that will remain as guesswork. I am certain that the shorter blue matte version is original. There is no way of knowing exactly when it was printed - but most likely sometime closer to the 81 release.
There is also no way of knowing exactly when the longer blue matte daybill was printed. Tim Ridge is acquainted with most of the people who were involved in the distribution of the film and they can only make guesses as to how accurate the various theories are.
Note that I did say in my blog that Tim found that he also had the shorter version in his collection. So, that means there are at least two shorter versions from different sources.
As the artwork on the shorter version is identical to the 81 reissue, I would guess that the shorter blue matte was printed using the same plates with an unknown quantity printed on the matte paper.
I actually don't have both versions at the moment so can only use a photo of the longer version that I sold some time ago.

Very odd.
