Musicals! Your Favourite Musical Number

edited June 2014 in Movie Talk
Following up on a discussion elsewhere

My mum loved musicals, so I ended up watching so many I can't even remember all the ones I have seen until they come round again on TV. If you like musicals then you probably have a favourite musical number from a movie (or two), add yours here! It'll serve as a double bonus for some of us to watch them for the first time, or even again!

To start: here's one of my fav musical numbers from one of my favourite musicals

Comments

  • I'm at work now and don't have time to dig up clips.  My problem is that I absolutely love old musicals and it would be difficult to narrow it down to just a couple:

Title song from Singin' in the Rain
'Have yourself a very merry Christmas' from Meet Me in St Louis
'A Couple of Swells" from Easter Parade
"Brotherhood of Man" from How to Succeed in Business
"Skid Row" or "Big Bad Mother" from Little Shop of Horrors.
    ...

The list just goes on and on.
  • This is one of my fav classical musicals, lot of people don't know that Yul Brynner performed this on stage over 2,000 times

  • Really! DNK...
  • 2000. Over how many years? :-O
  • I love funny face. Audreys dance sequence in a french bar is awesome!
  • "In 1951, he landed the defining role of his career as the King of Siam in the original stage production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical, The King and I.  Brynner won a Tony Award for his role...He went on to star in and co-direct the film version of The King and I, and was intimately involved in virtually every aspect of the production."

Yup, he did the stage show before the film and then for many years after...
  • This was very common. An actor gets a perfect role and they perform it ad nauseum. Two examples of this are Henry Fonda in Mister Roberts and Jose Ferrer in Cyrano. I always wonder how they felt as they performed it for the 2,000th time!

  • My favourite musical number at the moment is actually an entire movie as the whole movie is one musical number (every word that is spoken is sung)

  • Great choice! I have watched the ending a million times. A tad sad, wouldn't you say?

  • Never seen it but read the synopsis...a real tear jerker by the looks of it
  • The Cyd Charisse/Gene Kelly Broadway Melody Ballet from Singin in the Rain. In fact, the entire Kelly sequence is amazing.

When Debbie stresses the "morning" while on the table I fall in love...

  • Always was impressed with this one, apparently O'Conner had to be hospitalised after doing this.

  • Let me put up that Brotherhood of Man one.

  • Love it!
