Charlie's Kitchen - The Official Thread

So I thought I would have had this kitchen whipped up in a matter of months.  I started demo in November 2013, stopped my other hobby linenbacking (sorry Matt and well Matt J too).

From when we bought the house:

Notice they didn't show how freaking annoying having the fridge next the kitchen door would be.  Who opens the fridge when looking at a house.  So basically if the fridge door was open you couldn't get in the kitchen.

Mid Demo Pictures.  It had ferr downs all the way around and a studded in pantry and wall over ares and a huge island that was another restriction to movement in the kitchen.  Plus there was not a lot of counter space - it was always cluttered.

  • wow Charlie - seriously impressed. ALL your own work?
  • Everything except the gas line.  And me and my buddy tag teamed the ceiling.
  • My wife is content with cleaning up the debris.  She is crucial though in helping me hold stuff etc.  She also helped chip up the botched leveling compound job under the engineered floor.
  • Well congrats indeed
  • So what did you do without a kitchen during the demo? A whole bunch of takeout?

Also a dedicated Kitchen thread needs a pic of you in an apron...
  • Nah, nuked food a george forman grill, and a toaster oven...
  • Bet your getting tired of cooking that way.
  • LOL I couldn't imagine eating food off a foreman grill for that long. Hell I would BBQ or something instead.
  • Getting there Charlie, I must say that Dry-wall set up you guys have sure makes life easy for Electrics and Plumbing...

While we did ours, I set a temporary Kitchen up in the garage. It was still a bit of a chew on, but did the job for a while.
  • What do you use on your walls Paul?
  • Ohhh, I think I remember your cinema room now....saw some ducting for cables.
  • All our walls are brick with plaster on. So it's trunking for the cables, which are plastered back over, the pipes just have to be clipped on, and hidden/boxed in. On the splash-back areas we used Ceramic tiles.  The floors are concrete, so there's no going that way either with cables or pipes...
  • Yeah, sorry I remember. That's a pain in arse......you do industrial for work not domestic right?

Except love jobs for the family.
  • Hot Avatar btw Paul
  • Yes industrial mostly, but we also do all the domestics as well, you know mess-room, toilets, canteen, etc.

I try to avoid Govy work now, knees are about shot...
  • I hear ya, my knees are getting better now.
  • Wish mine were, there's nothing worse.... :(
  • Taping and floating is done in the kitchen.  A light sanding tonight and onto the ceiling!
  • Another cool thing I got to do since I was doing it myself, was to create small built ins along the adjoining walls in the guest bathroom and bar.  I put in 6" studs to create a deeper wall for shelving.  You can see the larger distances between studs in the picture below.

I was also able to use a bit of the air return cavity to build in a bread box at the end of the counter tops (right by the grey duct where the top of the ruler is).

  • What, no secret tunnel?
  • All I know is the rest of my house is going to look like shit once I get done with the kitchen.  I have a feeling this renovation thing will never quite end...
  • Been there done that and there was never a truer name for it...

  • Love that movie!

    Love that movie!
I thought it was a documentary
  • In Australia we put noggins between our studs, which is a bitch later on if you want get cables down the wall at a later date. So smart people put draw wires in if they think they might need a cable later on in certain places.
