Bruce, I was wondering

Feel free to answer or not answer, and rough estimates are fine I wouldn't expect you have this sort of drill down data.

I vaguely remember you once posted the stats of where your buyers are located, Australian/NZ was quite low on the list?

So what percentage of Australian paper that you auction
  1. Was consigned from Australia
  2. Ends up going to Australia

Comments

  • That would be hard to determine exactly, but in general a LOT of each country's posters ends up going back to the "mother country". But surely that makes sense, i.e., that Japanese collectors would value Japanese posters more highly than other collectors, etc.

I would love to make an "around the world" tour, and run an auction in each country for only that country's posters (as you did with Australian posters). Obviously, each country's collectors would love the huge savings on shipping.

  • Thanks - was just curious.

As far as a world tour to save freight for locals are concerned, interesting concept although I am not sure what collectors from other countries think about the postage charges out of the USA but I'd venture to suggest we Downunder really don't have an issue, I mean sure we'd like it cheaper but I seriously don't think most feel it is expensive.

Americans on the other hand seem to really scream blue murder when it comes to freight out of this country to them - yet it pretty much costs exactly the same as we pay the other way.

Not just that, but sometimes Americans will scream "blue murder" over shipping in their own country, too!

We get people who spend $1,000 on a poster and then complain that $12 shipping is "too much", and say "Can't you just put it in a bag with one piece of cardboard"?

On the other hand, the endless rises in shipping costs is choking off world trade. The Internet opened the entire world to buying and selling posters from country to country. Super high shipping costs are starting to reverse that process, and that is very sad.

For the longest time we were told it was high oil costs that drove the higher shipping costs. Then oil plunged, and gee, not a single price dropped. :o

Indeed. 95% of what I have purchased from Bruce's site is argentinean or Argentina related. I like to think of it as repatriating historical artifacts
  • I do think for the most part, collectors stick to what they were brought up with... posters from their own country.

    Repatriation.  =)
  • Yeah, those daybills in Chris' collection are in dire need of repatriation...come hell or high water...
  • you're welcome to visit Bruce if you need a base for a local auction. We have a spare room, plus a poster room that might contain a few goodies for you to see.
You're right about postage, it has severely limited my overseas purchases recently, plus slowed sending things on consignment.
  • That goes the reverse way too, Rick. I have two older sons who have moved out, so I have a spare room, and you could hand deliver consignments and stay a few days!
