Interesting... I would have thought you would want everything wet to prevent the dry parts from sucking all the water from the paste...  Do you wet the masa prior to laying the poster to prevent this?  Or do you wheat paste both the poster and masa?

What Jdrace has told me is that he applied the masa to the poster and let it dry.  Then attempted to linenback the paper sandwich to the masa...
  • Wow! I've always cooked my wheat paste w/ buffer the night before-let cool then refrige till next day-but my wet work has always been a single day-

---applying the masa to canvas, then wet poster (I've let the poster dry for about 20 mins before laying) to the masa-let dry for 3-4 days before any restoration.
  • I've usually do all my masa first with the plans to back the same amount of posters the same day but I fell short a few times.  I was always worried about backing the poster to the dry masa...  I did it anyway and it didn't hurt anything.  If there was any benefit it was hard for me to tell but - maybe the poster dried quicker.   I'll have to do an experiment here.  I am still curious how the masa doesn't suck all the moisture out of the wheat paste though.  I guess you could dampen the masa and also apply wheat paste to avoid wicking...
  • Hi Charlie,

    The less wet the better.

<<<< Do you wet the masa prior to laying the poster to prevent this?  Or do you wheat paste both the poster and masa? >>>>

    No and no.

I work out all folds/crease/water after the poster is out of the bath. The poster is now quite dry and completely flush. I lay a thin layer paste on the poster, put it down remove the Mylar. That is it. No more touchy. No brayer. in fact I threw the brayer in the garbage 15 years ago!

    Happy Valentine everyone,
    dario.
  • Charlie-have you ever DELAMINATED a poster? Heard that it can be done? Technique?

was thinking maybe heat applied? An iron then slowly seperate the two layers?...
  • No.  You will fail.  That is all.

In all seriousness.  Looks like bestine might work:

Cool! Much appreciated! ! I've found a really cool Arizona for Clinton poster from 1996 that is laminated & I want to try it on. I'll experiment with something else first before attempting the Clinton paper.
  • I believe it worked for this guy because these were on heavy boards. I bet anything you get very different results with a thin paper poster. Also the guy is foolish to splash around large amounts of Bestine. It is bad for your skin and bad to inhale.

  • Ya Bruce, you beat me to it.

Big warning! This stuff is harmful to your health. It will turn your brain/liver to jello and you go stupid as well.

Really really well ventilated area, mask and fan so on.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

    Cheers,
    dario.

Dammit, the warning came too late for Matt

Yeah-the video showed large amts splashing around. I'll use a syringe.

@Bruce- I'm sure you've handled them before, but the piece I'm intending to work is a heavy card stock campaign poster from 1996. I'm hoping the heavier/thickness of the paper will allow me to be more aggressive in removal.

Dario-Charlie? Question-isn't lamination applied with a heat seal process? Couldn't some heat reverse the process? Maybe an iron with a paper barrier in between?

I will post the poster tomorrow and the sample for experimentation.

Only in California and Canada... In Texas, guns and spicy Mexican food will kill you first.

It actually the same on the health hazard scale as butane lighter fluid at 2 and just above regular lighter fluid at a 1...  No worse than refinishing chemical or gasoline...

    Now I've been hexed!...:punch:...... B)
  • All of the above, Charlie.

I use them almost everyday for the last 20 years removing tape n'stuff. Long term exposure like that would be devastating if I didn't protect my self.

If you guys are in for the long haul, protect your self.

    Just saying,
    dario.
  • Dario said:

Good to see it hasn't affected you much Dario.

  • Me and Mark ten years from now...

    Dario in another 10...

It's exponential.  Just Kidding - I totally get it.  I should and will be wearing a mask - I can definitely feel the effects during an intense tape pull.

  • Everyone takes in so many chemicals every day in their food. The last thing you need to is to increase your exposure, and breathing this stuff in, or having it contact your skin may really contribute to health issues.

I am getting to an age where lots of friends and relatives have been diagnosed with all kinds of cancers, and who really knows what causes it. Protect yourself!

  • Well.... I'll be off to Lowes this weekend to get a mask. With 2 small kiddos-don't need anything else getting me crazy! =)

I've always worked with glasses to protect my eyes, now a mask-and my poster room has a ceiling fan I put on high speed.

  • Dario said:
Now that is some serious lung & eye protection! That could go on your website! =)

What type of mask is that made for? What type of filter does it use? Thx.

    BEST SELFIE...EVER!  Love it!
  • Hi Mark,

I have other mask as well. I got it covered.

    Hi Ves,

Thank you! Ya turned out pretty cool. Took it yesterday morning to post here ( 5 min job ) . Canon G10, post PS and silver efex pro for tweak. ( creativity should not end at 24 or 36 exposures )

    Enjoy your weekend everyone,
    dario.

Thanks Dario! Will be picking one up before more Bestine use.
  • Charlie-Question re: Tape Removal.

After removing tape from poster, whether it leaves behind a noticeable yellow-paper imbedded stain-or after scraping off excess crusty brownish/yellowish residue, does the later Deacidification bath or bleaching help to wash away/arrest the harmful properties of the tape?

    Thx.
  • I've come across a daybill that has several autographs on it. The daybill could probably benefit from some touch ups - it has tape staining and some small tears. Is it possible to do much with the poster without destroying the signatures?

Most tape stain will bleach out, some don't.  There are also those tape stains that sorta turn to plastic - nasty.  Worst case you can try the chems and it they don't work - air brush...
