  • I will get to comment but I don't wish to appear to hog the limelight. I will give other members time to comment first.
  • So the middle two are from a 70s re-release?
  • Middle two and last two are 1970's.More details to follow.
  •  Seeing no one is commenting here here  is what I know.

In order of how you originally posted them some information on release dates for The Ten Commandments.

The Richardson designed W.E.Smith printed daybill was the original for the film that was  released in Sydney in 1958.

The second daybill  printed by Robert Burton as John informed us is a 1960s RR. Can't be 100% certain the year but there were screenings in 1960 and none that I can see after then located on Trove. Availability to newspaper advertisements after 1954 are limited though. 1960 seems a bit too soon to me so calling it early 1960s is what I personally think it is.

Images three and four due to the censorship ratings and CIC printed on them would make them either 1970 or 1971.

Image five with the G rating I would say very late 1971 or 1972 before a big official re-release in the next year.

Image six with the G rating and the wording at the top would have been for an official re-release I believe in 1973.

  • Hondo your knowledge is amazing. I like the 1960 re-release more than the original
  • Wow...so all from the 1970s?  Is that an oddity?  It seems strange to me that one film would be re-released soooo many times in just a few years.  I know it was a huge film, but still seems strange.

Only three official re-releases. The three images were just stock replacements. CIC in 1970 /1971 did this with a lot of films. Remember how many CIC posters were printed for Two Mules For Sister Sara.

Yes, this is what made me think 70s initially...
  • Ok so to resurrect this thread, this daybill is a Richardson, so I am assuming it was released at the same time as the other one by WE Smith, but it just misrepresented on emovie as a 60s RR - am assuming because the Burton ones are so common and the artwork is the same, they just missed it...heck I did too!  So we have two styles from Richardson Studios for the original release.

And so the Burton 60s RR would have been based off this art.

    What say you guys?

Very well spotted Ves.  I certainly missed it too. There were two styles of this original poster of The Ten Commandments then and one must keep in mind over decades Richardson produced titles with two designs and this one along with the earlier late 1950s War And Peace it would appear to have been the last ones produced and TTC the last. Why was one printed by W.E. Smith and the other by Robert Burton then ?

My thoughts are as W.E. Smith was slowing down in their poster printing operations in the late 1950s The second style of The Ten Commandments was given to Robert Burton to print along with Vertigo, The Geisha Boy  and some other daybills in 1958 which were listed in my Hondo's daybill Q & A thread last month.

The 1960s version was copied from the newly discovered first release poster. If one looks closely you can notice some very slight differences. It is so close to the original though is is as it is the original artwork so why then wasn't Richardson credited ? I will need to have a closer look at the two posters to compare.

  • I just recently picked up this second Richardson style, which is what sent me looking.  I think it was printed by WE Smith as well...but need to confirm.  I will take some pics tonight and post up what I see.

When you have the Richardson in hand, you can definitely tell the difference in standard of artwork.  The RR is just more rough in style.

I'll post up some nice big pics of all 3 (2 Richardsons and RR).

And can I just say, a huge thanks to Lawrence for his passion around printer and distributor information because it now forces me to take a closer look at daybills and not just take for granted what is listed!

  • That second Richardson find is a pretty rare one. I cant recall ever having it or seeing it.

  • Thanks for your comments Ves. You are right regarding the printer as on closer examination the poster was indeed printed by W.E.Smith and not Robert Burton as I apparently assumed for some reason this morning. This certainly makes more sense now. Hands up who owns a copy of this rare TTC poster apart from Ves? I certainly don't.
  • I think there might be a few out there...people probably think they have the Burton printed RR but are sitting on the Richardson instead.  I certainly wouldn't have been paying close attention prior to all the printer talk on here...

Here are some pics for comparison:

  • So my Ten Commandments aussie poster collection is now COMPLETE:

  • Yeah!
  • Way to go Ves ?
