  • Is Mel selling up?  I vaguely recall something being mentioned...
It sure seems like it Ves.  In Bruce's latest linenbacked auctions several of the posters appeared to have been Mel's - like the This Gun for Hire, Affair in Trinidad amongst many others...

Ahh Mel, well pull up a chair young Sven, grab yourself a cuppa, maybe some sandwiches, make yourself comfy in front of the fire...so, have you got a couple of hours?

  • What....you gonna tell the abridged version...

    Hi Sven,

You are not alone...most people who haven't frequented APF wouldn't know very much about him either.  He was very prominent in terms of posting over at APF.

I think he liked to think he was a prominent collector :) You know that wanna be A list collector.

He had a huge collection of mainly newer titles but seemed to jump on the old stuff bandwagon after a while.

He rubbed quite a few people in the hobby up the wrong way with his posting style and attitudes.  Had a run in or two with the fella myself a few times.

He did have (not sure if it is still up) a wonderful site which was great for collectors of newer items as he had a bunch of pages dedicated to telling the difference between a fake and an original on many of the hip must have newer titles.

He is a lawyer by trade (really that says it all right) but in seriousness I hope his selling off of his collection is nothing more than he is bored with the hobby and is moving on to something else.

If you are bored, head over to APF and check out some of his posts...I am assuming they are still there?  I dropped off APF ages ago and am not really sure what happened there...I know that they had a falling out...he and the Frenchman, but not sure what happened.  Others may enlighten you more to that than I can.

My two cents...I'm sure others have far more interesting war stories...

  • Thanks Ves for providing some insight!  Im now preparing sandwitches and gathering some firewood for the juicy stuff! I wonder how many other hobbies this happens with.

Sounds like alot of stuff goes down on APF, this forum seems much nicer in comparison. Lets hope it continues as the site grows. Ok we give cheek but no fall outs.

Sven. You've hit the nail on the head, you've summarised our forum to a T in eight words. (whoops...left an opening there)
  • Don't mention the T word.

This is the site that Ves mentioned (http://moviepostercollectors.com) - it was/is a fabulous resource unfortunately it is not kept current. He built it himself and was in the process of building a new one. I had actually offered my company to build him a new one that was a little more user friendly for free and host it on our servers but he felt he could do a better job... then would ask me questions about the how he should do stuff.

Ultimately he imploded and walked away from the hobby after five hectic years of collecting.

Shame there aren't more pictures of his apartment around - here's an old picture of one of his walls, trust me, every wall had the same amount of covering - every wall

In Mel's defense, I had photoshopped the posters he had for others, but you get the idea as to the why from the title of the top right one...
  • Ah ha..".its all about me" atttude.

The T i am guessing is Thierry or eatbrie. He's like the head of the clan on APF? Ive seen his website and seems to have an unlimited supply of $ for posters. Anyway was not looking to probe into the details thats between David and T .

  • Wow even the name is banned!!!
  • He doesn't pay for his posters - 95% of them he gets for free, then tells everyone they paid too much for the ones they worked hard to pay for.
  • @Sven...indeed, I too wondered who Mel was after reading a lot of the APF threads....lots of history over there...and yes, VMPF is the place to relax.   :)
