Scarface Authentication

I get daily emails and phone calls from people wanting me to authenticate posters for them. Last night a guy phoned me and said he wanted me to urgently confirm that a poster he had was original. He said he had already checked the prices of other similar posters and they were worth "thousands". I asked him to send a photo to me and said I would get back to him. I emailed him back with my opinion. Before I let you know what his reaction was, I thought I would post a picture of his poster and see what you think .........

  • Yeah I got the same call.
  • So did I and the caller ID interestingly read "I.B. Dreaming".  Good thing it wasn't a collect call...

  • After I politely gave him my opinion he sent me this ....

"Why would there be cencorship or distribution detail upon it when its been in the bloody frame since 1983? I think your just jealous.. dont worry bout it though I got some real experts quotin me on it.. just so you know i already know its an original cause iv always had it as an original.."

I guess you could reply and let him know the frame is of more value than the poster Or apologise , say he was right and recommend he go and get it conservation framed with museum glass $-)
  • Yep, some people deserve what they get.  I hope he paid a fortune for it.

John, you have more patience than I.

    Finally! You've been exposed...
  • It could be a rare French OS for that small pocket of the English speaking population in southern France.

    on the Italian border...
  • That's the funny thing about some of these people - they've already made up their mind well before seeking out any sort of quote or authentication

Why they even bother is the question?

Hope the real posters weren't in the line of fire!  Instead I'll send over some a few of these very authentic Scarface posters to help you clean up the mess...

That's very true. I just hope he doesn't try and palm it off to someone else as original.
  • Send him this link John and then maybe he'll realise it's not an original and not valuable.
There's a guy locally with some old posters that I would buy at a decent price. They are originals but not worth much. The best is probably a Dr No reissue but he thought it was worth $2000. I had to explain it was a 1970s re-release, not worth $200.
He had some Elvis 1960s posters he wanted $500+ each. They are real cinema posters, but he'll never sell them (at least to me) at unrealistic prices.
I've had other commercial posters offered to me over the years and people got angry when I said they're not worth anything and I'm not interested.

  • He's certainly changed his mind about the value. Maybe he did see this thread!
  • Someone take him up on the local pickup offer.  I am sure the visit will be a treat
