Marchant And Co.

It has been thought by many including myself that Marchant and Co Printers, who printed some magnificent daybill posters and one sheets, ceased producing  posters around 1943. I have over the years researched Marchant and have  found some examples of posters printed by them extending up to 1949. I will share the titles I have discovered soon but in the meantime I would be interested in hearing titles  of  any Marchant posters printed between 1944 & 1949 members have or are aware of.?

  • Obviously the subject of Australian film poster printers is a hot or miss affair. Chromo Print a hit and Marchant a miss. Well that's life.

  • Merchant and Co. Printers is one of my favourite's. I wish they had stuck around for longer. Very unique photo lithograth style!

You are right and they are favourites of mine also. Around  about 1944 they lost there touch and mainly produced duotone daybills.

  • The last known daybill image I have been able to locate for a daybill printed by Marchant & Co, is for the 1949 MGM film Intruder In The Dust.

Oh how the might fall. Both images are first release as they have the An MGM Silver anniversary Picture notation on them.Compare the original W.E. Smith colour version to the Marchant duotone version and make up your own mind.

  • Oh Wow!
  • We definitely need more pics of Marchant and co posters.
  • Excellent examples of some of  their best work. Keep them coming. I would love to see some examples also from 1944 onwards .You will find a few credited as M & C as well as Marchant & Co. I have only found MGM posters produced by them from 1944 onwards.

Interesting, because the AU1SH was printed by W.E Smith was it not?

Of the countless number of Marchant & Co. posters I have sighted and recorded details on they have all  been daybills with the one exception being the 1939 Australian one sheet of Gunga Din posted earlier within this discussion topic.

I am now curious if any other Marchant & Co. Australian one sheet images are out there? Love to see them if they exist.

  • How big a star was Carmen Miranda to have her own stock daybill?
  • She was punching out the films so probably a good idea - there must have been the earlier films before she was 'famous' when they were not stock?
  • John's been at Photoshop again...
