Full Bleed Posters

Why are "full bleed" posters so rare? Were extra labor costs involved? Did only a few studios produce them? I've seen them in the 30s & 40s, but none in the 50s. I've seen quite a few British Quads that appear to be full bleed, but few US poster-and only one sheets at that. Kiss of Death is striking, wish more would have produced!

It's not actually a true full bleed as much as it was printed on a bigger sheet and then trimmed to the size. RKO (Australia) Daybill titles are famous for being full bleed (but not everytime).

eg (both on linen - so that's not a border)

Thanks, I've seen where the borders of the posters were a fraction smaller as they were trimmed. I searched HA's database & the search result produces a lot of Euroean travel posters. A 30s Normandy travel poster just auctioned at HA and it got me thinking. Will definitely have to look at Aust DB's as a way to pick one up.

If one is going to start collecting travel posters the David Kleins are a good place to start. They have nice graphics for the most part, are relatively inexpensive and are ubiquitous

Love the aircraft travel posters as well. There is something exotic about early travel. The Imperial Airways "Fly there" is a favourite of mine from the 30's - Not full bleed.

Mark - there are several on eBay at any given time (Bruce has sold a batch over the last year or so too)

In response to your original question Matt of ''Did Robert Burton ever produce a full bleed poster ?'' the answer is --- yes there were posters printed in the period between 1990 and 2002 with titles unknown and no Robert Burton credits on the posters. This information relayed to me today by the Managing Director of Robert Burton Printers.
