Dating Night Of Bloody Horror Daybill

I know this is probably a film of little merit but a VMPF member sometime back mentioned  this title and that someone should tell Bruce about the release date in Australia or something to this effect. It was released in the U,S.A. in 1969 but what year was it released in Australia? I don't know the answer but the film has some very interesting history in the classification or lack of classification area.

  • Not much information on Trove but the film certainly had screenings in 1982

  • Wish Phil could post more on the various forums - his knowledge really is extensive and invaluable.

That said - I am sure an e-mail or PM would be answered eventually...

This film is a mystery  in regards to it's Australian film classification. The daybill poster has the R certificate classification on it but all electronic Australian film classification records available since the R certificate was introduced  in 1971 don't have any record of it. The following information I received from the Classification Branch Attorney-General's Department is as follows --

''Some older film titles have been subsequently reclassified and those may have papers on file, all such files would have an electronic record for the subsequent reclassification, however the film ''Night  Of Bloody Horror'' is not one of these'.

All files prior tom 1971, including the card index records, have been sent to the Australian National Archives''.

What I would like to know is how come the daybill has a R certifificate shown on it when it was never classified and  allocated one?

The question of when it was released hasn't been established. The first clue is John found an advertisement of a screening in 1982 and the only record of a screening in Australia to turn up. The distributor Hoyts Distribution seems to have commenced in around 1980. In my mind Night Of Bloody Horror could have been released in Australia in the following years and for the following reasons.

1980 . Hoyts the distributor started operating so it is a possibility

1981. The Boogey Man was released ( according to IMDB ) in Australia on 16 / 4 / 1981 by Hoyts Distribution and possibly had Night Of Bloody Horror also a Hoyts release as the supporting film  as the  same double screened at the Canberra drive-in release the next year.

1982. Firm proof of a release.

To sum up not a 1969 release as stated on eMovieposter.com but most likely a 1981 or 1982 release. Believe it or not.

Bruce has had to employ a new staff member just to take the emails (and send them out) as a result of the posts to this forum.  :D
  • Yes, I see that over 30 records have been changed for Song of the South Australian posters.
  • I guess the only thing accurate about the EMP database is the statement 'here is a picture of a poster we sold and this is the price we sold it for'
  • As far as the auction records go that is true.
  • Just had a look at the 1979 reissue US one sheets for Night of Bloody Horror. The Australian posters have very similar art which would support the theory that Australian paper is from early 1980

  • So, is it agreed that the Australian posters are early 80s?
  • John agrees with my thinking. Anyone else?

  • Someone shoud start copying and pasting the info on this forum and make a book on aussie movie paper.
  • I'd buy it
  • Now you've started something...
  • David can do that in his spare time.

I did publish a book once, when living in Melbourne - started my own publishing company just for the sole purpose of publishing one book (for charity), took me 12 months - there was no spare time!

    Beautiful book, bloody hard work.
  • I had no idea you were using the 'E L James' pseudonym

  • Published it not wrote it...
  • What was the book about Dave?
  • It was called Two & Under, it featured pictures of children under two years of age taken by an award winning Australian photographer. We sent him all over the country and it raised money for SIDS & Kids (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).

When you see daybills in 28 inch length it is a sure sign they are early '80s.

Blue background Rocky is another one people mistake.
