Thanks Sven! I gently used a palette knife to carefully remove the poly from the board, then carefully peeled the poly from the masa-careful not to bend the lobby.

I haven't ordered any holytex from Talas yet, but was motivated by Charlie's thread so I obtained a 90% poly/10%nylon blend thin fabric to try it out. It worked out! Will eventually order holytex to compare.

I have nothing to compare it too as I have no paperback items-the back of the masa feels a little textured as it has some residue of the dried wheat paste on it.

  • Well done Mark.
  • Thx David.
  • Nice...
  • Sweet stuff Mark!
  • Thanks guys, I'm eager to try an insert or half sheet next.
  • How many posters have you done now???
  • Good question. lets see.

    Linenbacked:

    3-US One Sheets

    1-English One Sheet

    2-US Half Sheets

    2-Yugoslavians

    2-Danish

    Paperbacked:

2-Lobby Cards (one experiment without poly, one success with poly).

Certainly not as many as I want. I'm thinking after the holiday's & New Year, i'd like to wash/back two in a morning. I think I remember reading where you washed/backed 4? in a day? morning till evening?

I know it typically takes me about 2+ hours to wash/back a one sheet, so 3-4 would be a test.

Still so much I want to do, time constraints a pain...

  • Still an impressive number, I've done zero...
  • I think if I went at it all day say 7 to 7 I would be exhausted but could easily do 10 posters if all the frames and boards were ready.   I would do two at a time on the wash table... If there was no bleaching involved even better...  The other night I started at 4:30 and did two posters by 6...
  • 10 would be an amazing feat! The most physical part for me is bending over to apply the wheat paste, to the masa, canvas, masa again and then poster. Two on a wash table sounds like fun, inserts, daybills, half sheets...just think how much wheat paste you'd need for 10, a gallon?

also thinking about paperbacking one of my Life mag ads, see how that turns out, as a very thin paper test...

  • Up next to get paperbacked this weekend-
    Title Card--Without Reservations-1946
    Front-

Backside looks good except for some black marker.

  • Magazine ad-1940s. 11x14.

  • I watch with interest and a rum in my hand...
  • Still waiting...
  • Nothing. What's is this, smoko?

Break time for a frosty beverage maybe! ;)
  • Well David, hope your rum left you happy...as my latest paperbacking experience left me grumpy :perturbed: this holiday season.
Very little went right while working on my ad, but the LC faired a bit better. Up first the 11x14 WWII magazine ad...
    •Before...looks bright!

    •After...looks faded with image degradation...

After a few PM's to Charlie, he seemed to know where I went wrong-chem's a tad to strong...I've never worked with this type of paper before, but chems just too strong...
•Next paperbacking will be two mag ads...gonna get this right!!!

Next was the TC Without Reservations...
wash process went well- I feel comfortable working with the board, poly & masa prior to placing the paper on top.
    •Before

    •After

The toning of the card did not reduce as much as I'd hoped from the bleaching-again, thanks to Charlie for his feedback on how I can achieve better results...onward!
*yes, it does appear the masa on the left edge is pulling a bit-don't think when i cut it out tomorrow it will affect the backing...

Great learning on the trade and lobby card!!
  • Sucky result, excellent learning curve. Thanks to Professor Charlie your future is bright
  • Yes, a very Hindenburg-like disaster for the advert, fortunately the lobby turned out much better. Am hoping to back some more this weekend if time...need to figure out the deacid process.

Yes, Charlie has been a great help!

Although i thought of Charlie when I saw this one... =)
