One of the most unique and intimate concerts from the British blues revival of the 1960s was the “Blues and Gospel Train,” filmed in a suburb of Manchester, England.

The “Blues and Gospel Train” was staged on May 7, 1964 by Granada TV. Fans who were lucky enough to get tickets - some 200 of them - were instructed to meet at Manchester’s Central Station at 7:30 that evening for a short train ride to the abandoned Wilbraham Road Station in Whalley Range.

When the train pulled in at Wilbraham Road, the audience poured out and found seats on the platform, making their way past Muddy Waters, who was singing “Blow Wind Blow.”

Here’s the full list of performances, in order of appearance:

    Muddy Waters: “Blow Wind Blow”
Cousin Joe: “Chicken a la Blues”
    Cousin Joe: “Railroad Porter Blues”
Sister Rosetta Tharpe: “Didn’t It Rain”
Sister Rosetta Tharpe: “Trouble in Mind”
Muddy Waters: “You Can’t Lose What You Ain’t Never Had”
Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee: “Talking Harmonica Blues”
Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee: “Rambler’s Blues” medley
Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee: “Walk On”
Sister Rosetta Tharpe: “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands”
    Blues and Gospel Train

The taping was interrupted by a heavy downpour but fittingly, Sister Rosetta Tharpe who arrived by horse and cart played 'Didn't It Rain'.

  • Husband constantly tilting the pinball game!

  • Nice Matt. Reminds of the voice of lead singer from skulker. You might like this from their aToo fat for tahiti lp

  • Never heard of them, Matt-nice song/vocals/guitar-cool location shoot.
  • Very similar Sven like sulker a lot.
  • Absence the muppets, Elton's performance at the Hollywood Bowl is classic! I grew up spinning his Greatest Hits...great lyrics by Taupin...

  • Wow! Nice Willie song...now that's American roots...
  • Ok. Here's something from Coleman, Tx. ...not bad in concert too...

    Wow

This probably the only song-remake I've heard of them, but the singer has a nice strong voice. Good remake as well!

I played this for all my family one at a time, and now it is "stuck" in my brain, and I keep hearing it.

I think what I like about it so much (aside from loving his voice) is that he changed a sad song into an angry song, and I think that actually improves it, something covers almost never do!

  • Can't see it...blocked in my country too... ;)
  • Hmmm...blocked in US. Wonder why?
  • French can be arrogant. They look down on the US.

    She's hot.
  • Been a fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd for a gazillion years and in particular the song Free Bird (my funeral song); this popped up on my feed, had not heard this Free Bird demo before. It's great but after all these years listening to the hard-out 10 minutes version it will still have to take 2nd place.

  • I dug out some vinyl... Johnny Cash is a friend of mine.
  • 'Yes' is the most underrated band of all time...
