Film Noir Poster Exhibition and a noir poster book!

Been a while since I've checked in, been busy linen-backing the summer away for this exhibition! I'll post some photos tomorrow, but in the meantime here's a link to a large album on Facebook. The show featured about 85 posters, including 70 of my own and 15 from Eddie Muller's collection. I linen-backed about 70 posters in all, though a few of them were last-minute and I didn't get much restoration. Eddie was present at the opening on Saturday and gave a great talk.

Also, forgive the plug, but my poster book from Fantagraphics, FILM NOIR 101, came out this week. It seems to be generating a lot of positive press, so I hope you'll all consider checking it out. Here's a link to the listing on Amazon. It's pretty gigantic at just over 11X14, and the publisher aced the reproductions.

Now that I've gotten this show up on the walls and a book on the shelves, hopefully I'll be able to participate a bit more often. Thanks to Charlie for the tips getting me started!

  • AWESOME!  Wish I could have attended.  Looks like you had a pretty good turnout.

    I have a couple questions:

    1) It appears some of the posters were behind protective plastic or glass?  Is this true?  (There is no way I could stomach displaying my posters at a public showing with grubby hands, drinks and various greasy foods -- linenbacked or otherwise without a protective cover!)

    2) The Born to Kill, Nightmare Alley etc. posters - were these Eddie's?

  • As for your book - do you happen to have any photos of the interior pages?

Never mind - I see now that Amazon has the "See Inside" feature activated
  • Awesome indeed! Thanks for sharing.
  • Indeed, very cool...plus there was booze.

So, how well was it received etc?
  • Yes - the gallery ordered about 3K worth of Plexi to cover the one-sheets. It worked out well, though there was nothing to worry about. The gallery is always staffed, and the insurance os quite good. The posters were supported at the bottom with 3 inch archival photo corners and the pressure from the plexis held them up. The plexis were attached to the wall with L pins.

We actually had plexis that were large enough for the one panels, but when covered the ones in the top row of that large back wall were difficult to see, so we decided to keep them uncovered. We just put a rope up to block them.

I kept all of Eddie's posters in a group together, so he wouldn't have to move around that much when he gave his talk. In the end it didn't matter because he talked all the way around anyway.

The whole thing went over very well - it will be up through October 3, so I still have a few events to do in there. I.E. I'm giving a film noir & poster talk to students from a neighboring college in there next week. We also screened two films the afternoon of the gallery with Q & A afterwards with Eddie and me. I think all in all it was a huge success.
  • Great job!
  • Glad to hear!
  • Would loved to have been there!  Nice.
