My first thought was Sugarland Express, but that was set in the 1970s.
A search turned up Suddenly (1954) starring ol Blue Eyes himself.  But from the period when he was box office poison.  I vaguely recall watching this as an afternoon movie in the 60s.

Update: I am apparently wrong about seeing this as the film was shelved after the JFK assassination until it fell into public domain in the late 70s.

Correct. Suddenly from 1954. This taut little thriller. along with The Manchurian Candidate are well worth checking out for anyone who may not have seen them. I could do with seeing them both again.

I too used to believe the "shelving" story! Legend says that after President Kennedy was killed in 1963, Frank Sinatra asked that this movie be removed from distribution, but that is purely an urban legend. It is also said that Lee Harvey Oswald watched this movie days before the Kennedy assassination, but that may also be legend.

I think alot of these films (for me any way) blend into each other.
