Here's a piece of advise for Paypal users...

Do not use potentially conflictive words when messaging someone through paypal.

I repeat:

DO NOT USE POTENTIALLY CONFLICTIVE WORDS WHEN MESSAGING SOMEONE THROUGH PAYPAL.

Or even best, just don't message anyone through Paypal....

What happened? As some of you may know, I am helping a friend of mine to sell part of her poster collection. Sold some posters to a guy in Texas (who has a latino name and is not Charlie) and once I paid the seller fees I sent the rest of the money to my friend's account with a message that said something like: "here's the money from the posters I sold to *latino name guy*" Bam! Instant freeze!

Got a mail from paypal saying the use of the account was limited until they could verify the operation was not violating any of their policies, and asking to send them the birth date of the *latino name guy* to help clear things up faster. Searched a bit around the internet and turns out there's quite a few similar cases with people who sent messages through paypal that included words like Syria, Cuba, Castro and other latino names... (Hello FBI!!) I asked the seller his birth date, with no answer (can't blame him for not sharing his personal information)

So, I explained the situation to paypal and my case is now at some department to be revised...

It's been 8 days now, still not a clue.

Let's see how things turns out...

  • Great advice!

This happened to me as well when I simply used the phrase "Cuban poster"   :#:#:#
  • Do you remember how long it took to get it solved, you damn commie?
    Im starting to get pissed..
  • FARK!
Hope it sorts itself out soon.
  • Good heavens. Big brother is definitely watching and listening. How unnerving. I too hope it sorts itself out, ending with their apologies to you.
  • There are other poster collectors in Texas???
  • Got my posters btw... The Hepburn is a gem.

Indeed. They like only Cantinflas though...
  • So I was just online ordering a few windup tin toys for the mrs as some of her birthday presents. The website has an A+ better business bureau rating, 5 star rating based on like 42,000 shoppers, etc. I go to check out and pay via paypal and I get a message that says that the transaction may have violated paypal policies. What?? Okay, so no big deal, I'll just pay with credit card information, right? Not so fast. I log into paypal to see what's going on, and the transaction is "pending" with this message:
"This transaction is currently pending compliance review. Please do not try to send the payment again until you hear from PayPal. If the compliance team has any questions for you regarding the payment, the team will reach out to you via email. Thank you in advance for your patience with this matter."
WTF? Paypal has got my transaction in limbo, so I can't do anything to move it along? There's some strange things afoot at paypal, to be sure.
Post script: I just checked my email, and received this message:
"To comply with government regulations, PayPal is required to review certain transactions. The payment you sent is currently being reviewed and we will complete this process within 72 hours. This review only involves this transaction and does not affect the use of your PayPal account."
    Good Lord.  :s
  • Damn! Did I just jinxed you?
  • WTF is going on?!?!  The world is CRAZY
  • WTF is going on?!?!  The world is CRAZY
    Certainly looks like it is...
  • As a post script to my post script, I did receive an email yesterday stating that the payment was being reversed. Paypal wouldn't complete the transaction. No reason given, just this message:

"Unfortunately, we are not able to complete this particular transaction. This reversal is specific to this transaction and does not affect the use of your PayPal account. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."

Not quite as disturbing as yours, Matias, but still scoring pretty high on the weird-shit-o-meter.
  • Odd...
    I'm still waiting paypal's response...
