How to Proceed with Damaged Poster Bought on Ebay

Well it was meant to be a mint condition quad (this was in the description) and probably was until it was sent in the post as the ends have been damaged due to moving around in the tube. I kindly asked the seller to package it in a particular way - rolled in kraft paper, rolled smaller than the inside of the tube - pretty much EMP style. They assured me they were a poster collector and everything would be alright. Well they used a strong tube, but there was only newspaper on either end of the poster and gaps between this and the end of the tube - so it danced around in the tube all the way from the UK

So I really don't want the poster, I paid for a mint one and don't want anything less.

Ironically I bought from the same seller a year ago except they were using a different ebay id (same paypal address) - I also received a damaged poster. But I just excepted a $10 refund and the paypal case was closed (I basically did not have a clue on what to do)
The seller has good feedback (there were a couple of negatives on the old ID and some neutral) so either I am to fussy or just out of luck.

Any guidance much appreciated team! Obviously I will contact the seller and state my concerns but do I

1) Click on Return button in Purchase History
2) When do I raise a Paypal case and how should I proceed with it ?

I would like to return the item for a full refund (including original postage and return postage)

  • I would ask them for the refund directly  and if they don't reply within a day or two at most, raise the claim with paypal directly.  You have I believe 45 days from purchase, so not sure how much time you have left on yours.  Hopefully they just refund when you ask.  Don't bother negotiating if they are difficult, gets you nowhere.  If you raise with paypal directly I think they hold the funds until the claim is closed, so you should get your money back.   The only thing is you will most likely be asked to send it back, so not sure what your sellers return policy is.

I used to be flexible and nice but not anymore.  I even argue over postage where the amount I paid and the amount they spent is considerably different.

    Good luck.
  • As Ves says, but even if the seller has no returns, if you go through the bay, you will get your money back, as ebay "guarantees" all purchases. Be sure to send it back registered as they will ask for the tracking number..
  • It's gut wrenching when something you wanted (from eBay) is damaged, more so if it is hard to come by, but I am with the other guys, ask the seller then if no response then slap them with a claim via PayPal.

Then name and shame them here  =) if he/she is a collector then they should know better
  • Sorry to hear about this Sven. I think the best approach is always to contact the seller first and ask for a refund. He/she may ask you to return it but there should be no problem in getting a refund. If they don't respond appropriately then you should file a case with ebay or paypal. You can phone ebay and they will be able to guide you through the process.

Hopefully the seller will resolve it for you without having to go through ebay.

  • Many thanks to Ves Paul David and John. I will contact the seller to resolve by way of refund and am happy to return it. Will let you know how i go.

And btw always love how members on this forum package posters with such care!
  • Thanks david for the prompt.

The seller has accepted the return and has accepted to pay return postage. The return button in purchase history is how to initiate it.

The seller wanted untracked airmail but i insisted on tracking

Its now on its way back to the UK, rolled in kraft paper.

    Keep u all posted!!

  • Nice result so far, shame tho' - I am sure you'd prefer the poster without the hassle.

    Too right.

So the seller has given me a refund for the poster and original postage. The item is still in transit, so this is great and aligns to what we both agreed.

We did agree that he would pay me the return postage  when i showed the receipt (which i have done) but now wants to pay it when he gets the poster. Slightly dissappointed on this front only because he broke this agreement . He says i am difficult  but i just remind him what we both agreed.

    Keep u posted
  • I guess from his point of view you could have paid for the postage for something else, claimed it off him and kept the poster. I think you can claim via PayPal the return postage too? Point that out to him and ask him to pay...

Besides if he didn't want any hassle he should have packed the damn poster correctly.
  • Last week I brought a Belgian in excellent cond. Then the seller tells me it had water damage on the top half from a lightning strike that hit his house a year ago. (he we go I thought). He says he'll take $15 off the price in a refund.

With no photo I message him the deal's off, I take a full refund.

A couple of days go past, he says I haven't replied. What should he do. I message back.

Another couple of days go past, I get a similar message. I message him again.

Nothing. Today my messaged him something about ebay fraud and I'll let every poster forum know he is a bad dealer.

Half hour later, I check my Paypal to see I have a full refund pending from this joker.

    Thanks dogs_pet!
