Is there a Sci-fi element to this Lawrence? The burning Hellcat looks like it's being intensely heated up by a alien ray or something?
Love your thinking Wil but unfortunately no. You certainly deserve some points for trying. One war is portrayed as happening at the present time, and the other war is in the mind and told in flashbacks.
  • Yeah... there was no chance in hell of me knocking that one off.  :s

A final clue for 198 where another sterling effort is required. Two wars featured.

You really deserve to nail this one Wil. Two clues given above, not one.

    Ah, I'm blind, Sterling Hayden's 1952 - 'Flat Top'

Bravo. So glad you ended up with the answer.

  • So am I Lawrence, so am I...  ;)
  • I noted that the image is historic.  Here it is from 1943.  I hope that Lt was awarded at least the Navy Cross for climbing into that burning plane
Crash landing of F6F on flight deck of USS ENTERPRISE while enroute to attack Makin Island. Lt. Walter Chewning, catapult officer, clambering up the side of the plane to assist pilot, Ens. Byron Johnson, from the flaming cockpit. November 1943. (Navy)

Great info on the image Jay.

The film utilized real life colour aerial combat film and the climatic battle scenes are actually footage taken during the Batte Of Leyte Gulf in the Phillippines in 1944.

The USS Enterprise shown during the Battle Of Leyte Gulf.

  •  199 200 201

Something different this time. Three classic European films but may prove to be a challenge.

  • I said it may be challenging, so come clues -

    199 - Russian film.
    200 - German film.
201 - American actress appeared in this Italian film, which was actually a co-production.
  • 200: The Bridge (1956)?

  • #199.  Ballad of a Solidier (1959)
can't pronounce Russian name, but here is poster

  • 200: The Bridge (1956)?
Correct. Well done Wil. The Bridge ( Die Bruche ) is a 1959 West German film. I viewed the film at a film society screening, and the 16mm print shown was courtesy of the West German Embassy and it was in English, and very well dubbed, if I remember correctly.

Correct. Also very well worked out by Jay. A well regarded film from the Soviet Union.

Another clue for the remaining unanswered 201. The leading American actress had a famous father.
  • 201: Kapo (1960) with Susan Strasberg (father Lee Strasberg)

    I like this one ALOT
  • I like this one ALOT
Agree Ves. My neighbour collects soviet era propaganda posters (house covered in them), stunning artwork, but very poor quality paper, very high acid content/browned much more than movie posters from the same period.
  • 201: Kapo (1960) with Susan Strasberg (father Lee Strasberg)

    Correct once more Wil.

     will be back again soon.
  •  202

    203                                                                                                                                                                           204

Three new British film images to identify.
  • 204 We Dive at Dawn

Yes, correct, and the film was released in 1943.

  • #203 - The Flemish Farm (1943)

One more solved thanks to Jay.

  • We may need a hint with the remaining image Lawrence?
  • We may need a hint with the remaining image Lawrence?
Sure thing Wil. The film was made to sway opinion during World War 11. It was known under two very different titles.

  • 202: 49th Parallel/Invaders 1941 :)
  • 202: 49th Parallel/Invaders 1941 :)
Correct. 49th Parallel in the U.K. and Australia, and as The Invaders in the U.S.A. and other some other countries.

  •  205 206 207

    How about these three then?
  • edited September 2018
    I'll take 206 as 633 Squadron (1964)

  • 205 is an all time favourite with an outstanding soundtrack, although I'll take 207 and leave for someone else:

The Train (1965), Burt Lancaster in the lead.
