When Was The Last Robert Burton Poster Printed?

A question was asked recently outside  of the quorum, The question was '' When was the last Robert Burton poster printed ? ''.

Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade from 1989 is the last one I am aware of. Does anyone have a later example?

  • All Dogs Go To Heaven ( 1989 ).

Released later than Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade in Australia. According to IMDB records the Australian release was the 26/ 12/ 1989.

  •                                                                                                                                                                                            Bad Influence ( 1990 )

According to IMDB records the Australian release was the 12/4/1990.

This could possibly be one of the last Robert Burton credited posters if not the last but keep looking.

  • I have just been speaking to the managing director of Robert Burton Printers and have found out from him that 2002 was the year film posters were last printed by Robert Burton and these were for Columbia Tri- Star the last film company they had been printing for. When I asked him why their name wasn't on posters after around 1990 he said it had to do with the style of poster that were starting to be printed which were without borders and possibly the distributor in certain cases requested it.

I also asked the question about the two styles being printed by Robert Burton and other printers of the same design in the 1970s & 1980s but he didn't realise this had happened and couldn't offer any explanation on why this occurred.

The father of the current managing director bought out Burton's in the 1970s and later when they moved premises large amounts of posters they held were apparently it seems lost or destroyed.

The now managing director David Hawkes when asked about print runs that happened at Burtons when he watched with his father posters being printed in the 1970s he guessed the runs were about a thousand.

David has passed on my interest to a lady who was in accounts years ago at Robert Burtons so hopefully I will hear back from her with some more information.

  • Very good!
  • More soon but in the meantime does anyone have any ideas or know when Robert Burton Printers Pty Ltd changed to just Robert Burton in capitol letters on posters? See above image examples.
  • It's not just Robert Burton...it still has the Printers Pty Ltd in small print as part of the logo.

Sorry I must be missing something. Is it possible to send me an enlarged image?

  • There you go...

There's an 80s font if I ever saw one...

  •   Thank you Ves and you say you have bad eyesight. Looking again on the above three images I posted I can just see it on the Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade daybill image. I was only stating it as being Robert Burton based on two things. On the Cataloguing The Printers thread there is a Robert Burton only listed there and of my viewing the three images on the three daybill images above.

Now this has been sorted out  properly I have below an image of the way the Robert Burton logo was printed before it changed over to the one you kindly posted an image of.  Would anyone like to say when this change occurred on the posters?

  • I only knew it because of my recent poster sort out...I came across quite a few...I haven't had a chance to go back and add details to my spreadsheet like year the film was released, but when I do, I will definitely add my two cents to this and the MAPS thread if I find anything of interest...
  • Thanks for your interest and participation.
  • I've not come across any daybills printed by Burton with just Robert Burton...always the Printers Pty Ltd in one form or another...
  • It wasn't me but probably it ended up on the Cataloguing The Printers thread as Robert Burton only as that is what it probably looked like to the person viewing posters at the time.If there is a Robert Burton only daybill thought I would love to know.

  • There you go...T

This change of logo appears to have taken place in 1988 and used sparingly until 1990 when the use of any printer's logos appears to have been discontinued altogether. Not too many posters from 1989 and particually 1990 have printers credits printed on them.
  •   ( Ves )

Bad Influence ( 1990 ) daybill previously mentioned here on this thread as being one of the last known Robert Burton credited posters printed. Appearing along side of it is an Australian one sheet of Bad Influence, with this poster having the exact same design, but without a Robert Burton credit or any other printers credit appearing on the poster. The question here has to be  was the one sheet also printed by Robert Burton as well, but just not credited as being printed from them?
  • The following The Handmaid's Tale (1990) Australian daybill now appears to be the last located poster that was credited to them

The previously mentioned credited Bad Influence daybill was printed for the release in Australia that commenced  on April 12, 1990  according to IMDb.

The Handmaid's Tale was released though on Augusr 2, 1990 according to IMDb, thus making this film the last currently known credited Robert Burton poster that I am aware of.
