UNIVERSAL STOCK POSTERS Spot the differences

At first glance, these universal stock daybills look to be the same but if you look closely you will see that each one has been printed separately.

Most people would think that they would have just printed a stack of stock daybills and used them to add the various film titles later as required. I wonder why they would go to the trouble of printing separate stock daybills. That would seem to defeat the purpose of them. What do you all think?

  • Interesting observation.I am curious if you have any other examples of duplicates of any of the four blank  designs with another film's details printed on them.

  • The Because Of You blank style is the same one used for the attached Playgirl poster. One wonders if there are anymore different variations around or any more images of the four your have made us aware of. Anyone out there have any to share?

I believe strongly there is a blank daybill of one of the four styles or may even be a fifth style for the Universal film Cult Of The Cobra.

I am thinking the images were inspired by Rock Hudson, Piper Laurie & Scott Brady all at Universal around 1951 /1952 when the three were under contract together. I'm now thinking  Because Of You ( 1952 )  was the first one designed and for Playgirl ( 1954 ) they used the same design. For The Looters ( 1955 )  maybe their limited original stock daybill stock ran out and this new variation was designed.

The two other designs with the red background look the same stock daybill design printed years later with The Invisible Man Returns using a similar style to the original two but they altered the House Of Dracula poster by removing the image in the bottom right hand corner and replacing it with an image of Dracula.

  • Interesting to see the Playgirl image.

With the House of Dracula, they actually printed the image of the man in the top hat (no sure it that is Dracula or not) right over the top of the image on the lower rh corner rather than actually replacing it.

It is possible, as you say, that they may have re done a new stock poster after their original supply ran out but I would have to wonder why bother to try and recreate something that was so ordinary anyway. Why not just come up with a new stock poster. One of the mysteries that will probably never be solved.

  • I think they are butt ugly ;)
  • I agree with you Chris. That's why I cant understand why they bothered reproducing them.

  • I firmly there is a Cult Of The Cobra poster out there somewhere that was printed on one of the blank posters containing the three poorly drawn images so if anybody sights an image of it at anytime please post in on this thread.

  • This is a stock poster from the same printing used for The Invisible Man Returns and House Of Dracula.
