Mad Max Blue One Sheets

I thought we had discussed this here already, but if we did, I can't find it....

Blue Mad Max One Sheets

Is this correct?

- 79 Matte Blue with printers details (original release, probably 3rd printing)
- 81 RR Blue Gloss with printers details
- 81 RR gloss with no printers details (I have heard these are questionable)

Did I miss anything?

I believe 81 RR daybill is gloss with printer details (not aware of any without the printers details)

Would be interested to hear other peoples take, esp John, Mark and Lawrence

    :)

    I want everyone's take...I said esp....not exclusively.

  • The three different colour Mad Max M.A.P.S. printed versions. Not sure where I originally got this three in one image from. I am thinking perhaps there may have been some thoughts about the posters origins published with the images.

The version without a printer's credit.

Nothing to add at the present time. I'll wait until I see what any others, including hopefully Bruce, have to contribute before I comment.
  • There are plenty of examples of Australian posters where some have printers details and some don't.

Yes this is true and Roadshow was of leader in this practice.

  • Anyone had both OS in hand at the same time?
Are they identical (paper, size etc) except for printer info?

Lol - well the. I am out too!

  •                     First printing                                          Second printing.                                      Third printing.

Thinking probable fourth printing backing up third printing.

I realy don't know for certain, but the above posters and the order of their printing are my thioughts.

As for the two known existing daybills, both the mauve and the blue versions printed by M.A.P.S. seem to be the only styles that were printed. No others without printer's details appear to have been ever printed.
  • 30, 28 & 27 inch daybills, all on matt paper.

    Anyone?

    So no gloss daybill?

  • I am just pointing out that a 27 inch matt daybill was produced. The scaling is different to 28 inch, so it's not just shorter margins top & bottom. This was from a separate print run.
You can't date these posters by a logical process i.e. matt first then gloss. As I have mentioned previously, there are other daybills printed on both sorts of paper around this time, which was a period of transition. All we know for sure is that purple / mauve is true first release 1979.
  • 2 of 7 Mad Max one sheets that have been stored rolled up together for the last 40 years. I know exactly which cinema they came from, and there is no doubt they are genuine. The 7 posters are all slightly damaged by water in the top left corner. All taken by a cinema employee. Simply collector paranoia that non-MAPs are repro. Over 2000 posters in this lot.

  • The orange Mad Max sold on HA today for $6600US, or $9123 Aus.
  • I am hoping one of you can give me a DEFINITIVE answer on this!

    I am currently auctioning this:
    https://auctions.emovieposter.com/Bidding.taf?_function=detail&Auction_uid1=6662755

It is glossy, with the MAPS info at bottom.

At one time I was told this was definitely 1979, and that there were both matte and glossy, with the MAPS info.

Later I was told it was definitely R81, because it was glossy and that there were ones from R81 with and without the MAPS info.

Now I am not sure what to think!

I listed this as R81, and someone emailed me today saying it is original.

I trust the top people here (ALL of them!) more than anyone else in the world, so what is the opinion of each regular poster here?

    Thanks in advance!

I have no DEFINITIVE answer to your question, and I doubt if anyone else has either. My earlier above posted thoughts on this subject still stand  today, but I cannot claim my thinking to be 100% supported by provable fact though. My theory is an educated one based on all the information available at hand at this time.,

Looking forward to any other members thinking though.
  • Thanks much Lawrence. Are you thinking the third printing was ONLY matte, or also glossy?

I am surprised the other knowledgeable members have not even expressed an opinion.

I agree with Lawrence. Unfortunately, there is nothing definitive so it is down to an educated guess.
  • I am not aware of glossy daybills for the original release, they were for the RR.  So I think the assumption is that the glossy one sheets are also RR.
  • Thanks very much, guys. So it seems like no one is 100% sure?

I guess I should leave it as R81.

But what does that make the one without MAPS? Also R81 or later?

Third printing ( M.A.P.S.) matte and the fourth printing glossy only to the best of my knowledge.

I am also surprised in only receiving responses from so few people, considering the keen interest shown in this topic over many years.

The version without the M.A.P.S. credit release date is not known for certain, but I would think a later R81 second follow up printing.
