To 'out', or not to 'out'... That is a question.

Im guessing Chris doesn't like the outing of auctions on items hes interested in bidding on..

Yes indeed - especially when those doing the outing are not bidding themselves.  Private messages are the appropriate notification if you see an auction that you believe someone else would have an interest in but not necessarily yourself.

Any other way is just disrespectful - in my opinion of course
  • I'd probably agree with Chris, why out an auction you are not bidding on? Would you out the auction if you were bidding?
  • Im not outing auction, but any u bastids interested in this?image
  • Chris is a wise man.
  • Has anyone here ever had a auction outed on a forum that they planned to bid on?  Its happened to me.
  • Yes, several times. You just know you'll be paying more, if you decide to bid...

What these people who out auctions forget is the amount of lurkers out there. who may just bid also, or even worse the seller himself, who may just shill-bid you up.

I find it's always people who won't be bidding, or / and those who have too much money and don't care.

Some auctions take some finding, and the lazy way is wait for someone to out it.  It's wrong on so many levels.
  • But what if it was something u were really interested in and had it not been shown, u could have missed out..
  • I still think it is wrong on all levels. Whether I would have missed it or not. I am just fortunate enough to of never had any of my auctions outed that I was interested in. But maybe that is because I collect the odd stuff.

I can think of one that Matt told me about that I would have totally lost my mind if it was announced somewhere. I think I should retitle the thread...

Are we approaching our first forum democratic policy? 'No public outing of auctions...' It's our forum, we can make some rules... Of course dealers don't apply...
  • No outing it is. I think if you know that someone is interested just send them a private message so everyone doesn't know about it.
  • Im neutral on it. Perhaps a vote from everyone?
  • When David gets on he can activate the polls plugin and we can do a vote...
  • Sounds good.

This is where, a PM from a member is more discreet. Or if it's been outed and you really want it, it costs more, sometimes lots more..

I've said many times collecting is a solitary hobby. It's great we help each other out from time to time, and chat about what we have and like on a forum, but if everyone knows of an auction, it will only be won by the person with the deepest pockets. Every time.     And there's nothing clever, skilful, great, about that.  Which is why I never bid at HA for instance, everyone knows about it, and the deep pockets win every time.

However finding these expensive posters at a fraction of the cost is one of the big thrills of the hobby, it takes a lot of time and work, and that can all be out done by someone stumbling on it, not wanting it, and outing it for all to see.
  • I agree Paul. That is part of the reason I never bid on HA as well. There items go for to much. Can find it elsewhere at a fraction. I think if a collector wanted it that bad they would have found it themselves. That is why it is nice to have a Wanted category for people to post their wanted items and then if other collectors stumble upon it they can message that member. Much better then outing an auction I think.

How do you know I wasn't already? I am waiting to hear whether it is drymounted or not...

Update: It has not been drymounted but it has been laminated, that said I don't know when it's from, got to be a repro

Hell yeah - way too many times.  And nearly always by those who think they are doing something "cool" by posting it.  But of course they had no intention of bidding themselves (or barely EVER even buy posters themselves anyways).

Private messages are such any easy solution.  Although those in need of attention will no doubt continue trying to get their misguided kudos by screwing over others...

    Well said Chris..

People are really posting links of auctions on forums so they can receive praise from others? This is disturbing,

It's comments like those that make me want to take the cold end of a red hot tire iron and shove it right up your Mel then watch you burn your hands trying to take it out.
