  • Hi Dave, are you still after the original quad? Please email me on info@picturepalacemovieposters.com as I have a great copy. Thanks, Mark
  • All dependent Mark.  I have emailed you.

Look for to hearing from you

    Davy
  • We all await the results perhaps in the Latest Aquisitions section!
  • We will see David, as long as do not have to sell my Mother for it !!!
  • Its a nice copy, but out of my league financially.

    I`m out :(
  • O.K. Curiosity has got the better of me. Can you say what the price was?
  • Dunno Paul
  • Bugger it, I`m sure Mark would not mind.

    £1800
  • Crikey, I wonder what He'll pay for my Hammer stuff....??
  • Just to go a little off topic here but most poster selling sites in the UK that show their prices in Pounds are a tad outrageous. I know the Aussie dollar is shit right now but compared to the U.S. they still look over the top.....with the exception of Dave @ Cinemasterpeices .

    Thoughts?

I'm 35 and none of those have been in my brain for all this years...

Yeah your right, although tad is a understatement. Most sellers ask ambitious prices. Some price items correctly, accordingly to the current market value etc etc, but not many do. I guess it all comes down to how serious they are to sell or are fishing in hope to land someone with little knowledge on prices.
  • On the other side of the coin, those UK prices have been like that for years, they must get what they ask?
  • I know it's hard for you fellows to see, but you would be amazed at what Quads sell for..   Some of the ones I never picked up in the olden days are now well out of my reach financially.

That said there's always the chancers who want to hold on for top dollar, and you see them sat with the same over priced posters for years.  It's true someone who doesn't collect posters but whats a certain film poster for the wall will unknowingly pay far too much, but those guys usually go straight to top dealers like Christies, etc and bypass the other dealers.

The dealers that sell mainly to collectors are usually the sensibly priced ones, though they all have their moments.
  • Any titles off the top of your head that surprise at the price, more in relation to (say) a US1SH?

Obviously Daybillers know that US1SH hold top dollar compared to a Daybill, there's no real ratio but if I was to guess, the average for a Daybill might be 60% of its US counterpart (I am sure others may argue this so before you do, it wasn't a scientific analysis!).

How do Quads generally compare? Because from a design perspective they can be outstanding due the landscape layout but design isn't the only reason people collect.

Quite right David, personally I collect as I love films, so I buy titles of films I like first and foremost. Secondly I buy if I like the look of a poster, so artwork comes second every time.  I have bought some awful to look at posters over the years purely for what they are. I also love pieces of Cinema history, a bit like that Avengers cups poster. It looks new and a bit crap, but in years to come it will also be part of the Marvel/Avengers history.

On the whole you can't escape the fact that U.S. posters bring more than any other countries, purely due to the size of the country, so higher demand. That said there's certain ares where U.K. posters will out do them in price. Two that spring to mind straight away are Bond, and Hammer horror, others not so obvious are Ealing pictures, and some of the British comedies...Carry on's, On the buses, confessions of, adventures of ...I know Hammer again with On the bues, but not Horror. Then there's always the odd title that will command higher prices that the U.S. ones. Night of the demon for one springs to mind.

U.K. prices over the years are catching up with the U.S, but I don't think they will ever out do them due the the amount of buyers in the U.S.      That said it shows how scarce British posters are in comparison. The States may produce Tens of thousands of posters for a Particular film where a good run in the U.K. is maybe 8-10 thousand, and lots of older titles were in the 500 to a couple of thousand printed range, hence Very scarce.

There's no ratio as such, it's more on a film by film basis.

  • So, very much like Australia, locally made films tend to garner more dollars that in the US, often because we 'get it'.

I would also suggest that films like Bond (the early days) and Hammer productions are distinctly British and so have a fare greater following (originally) in the UK and its colonies.

Scarcity I can see on some of the older titles although on average the (available) poster numbers look like they are similar on per head of population, I suspect the volume of collectors is also similar per head of population too.

What I do think is that collectors outside of USA are possibly more patriotic about collecting/preserving those poster produced in their country and then it becomes an obsession more than it does in the US collecting US1SHs. Look at the members here who collect specifically from their own: Australia, UK, South America...do we have any Mexican members? :D

I think the art on the Quad can be quite stunning, then again 'scene paintings' were almost always produced in Landscape format so it makes sense.

  • Thing is with the likes of Bond and Hammer, the Yanks want them too. It's not just a local thing, and I think that is helping to push the prices up. The comedies, yes that's mainly local, but we need to add in the rest of the world. I know a fair few French, Italian, German collectors that also go for Bond and Hammer, in fact quite a lot of the Horror titles in Quad format. I've helped several U.S. collectors pick up Titles like, Nightmare on Elm st, Night of the living dead, Evil Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the list goes on. I still have quite a list of Quads I'm looking for, for overseas collectors.

So as the rest of the world chases certain Quads, that scarcity factor kicks in. I hear a lot of Americans saying "Why is it so expensive" and the simple answer is, there isn't as many printed as there are US1Shts...
