Hello Community! Charlie was kind enough to send me an invitation after I asked. And here I am. Totally nuts.

I’m 61 years old, but I can still easily pass for 60. I’m now the Hamburg branch.

It all started for me about two years ago with the stock market. I was — and still am — pretty successful there because I got in at exactly the right time. But these are very volatile stocks that go up and down, up again, and sometimes way, way down. :-)

So I started thinking about how to keep my money safe. Old movies — whether film noir or B-movies — have always been my thing. But I never thought about the original posters. In Germany that’s not nearly as big a deal as it is with you folks in the USA. After doing my research, though, investing in really striking wall posters didn’t seem like the worst idea. The market is growing 5 to 15–20 % a year, and even here in Germany people are starting to wake up to it.

As usual, when something grabs me I read like a maniac and spent a ton of money on cool books and art volumes — Harryhausen, Reynold Brown, Learn About Movie Posters, etc.

At first I bought retail, but I quickly realized most of that stuff is borderline at best. What mattered to me was getting real originals and not getting ripped off.

Of course I made mistakes. Obviously. But not too many. In the picture you can see my latest big score from the Heritage Auction — the “Yakob Zentner Collection.” Ballpark figure: I bought every third poster.

Like I said — I’m completely insane.

Anyway, yesterday I was bidding hard again at the Spaceman & Monster auction (though I had already scaled it back — I really went overboard before). But they’re all just so damn beautiful!

What eats up a lot of my time (and a lot more money) is proper archival storage. If you look at every single purchase separately (and that includes art, comics, and pulp too), I’ve put together a collection that would take most people decades to build — and I did it in just a few months. I track everything in the iCollect Everything app and it currently says 530 items. Wow. I really hope my wife doesn’t ask what it all cost… :-)

And what can I say? Stock prices have dropped, poster prices are going up (well, not all of them). :-) But old movie posters pay a monthly dividend: every single time you look at them.

I’m really glad to be here and I’m looking forward to lively, friendly conversation.

Cheerio from Hamburg, Germany!

Hi
Thanks for the invite Charlie.
I always loved movie posters. My luckiest purchase was back in the 80s, when the Academy cinema was closing down.
Happened to go there to see whatever final films they were screening. They had a sale of old poster stock. So I bought a Strausfeld Mean Streets and Badlands for £5 each. Was all the money I had otherwise would have bought more. I was pretty young back then so when I got home my mother was very angry that I wasted my money on posters.
Fast forward few years later, my wife came home from IKEA with some frames, and asked if she could trim the posters to fit the frame. I had no idea of their value but thought best not to . Some time later I found out what they were worth.
I have a few Bonds, ( Roger Moores, and 1 Connery) also one of my favourites is Kuni Hagio, Raging Bull teaser poster.
Have some questions about Godfather Red face, hope you guys can help me with.
Mani

Thanks for the invite Matt and Charlie. I live just down the street from the greatest race course in the world, The Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I've been to every Indy 500 since 1964 except for the NO fans in attendance covid year, 2 years ago. I became a collector of open wheel racing memorabilia decades ago and have a nice collection....as it became harder and harder to find items I didn't have or were of interest after collecting for decades, a friend told me about Hollywood and all of the auto racing movies that came out of there. I had no idea there were so many movies done with auto racing themes and no idea how many of the biggest stars of Hollywood were in them. I started looking for and watching all of the auto racing themed movies, especially those which had not only footage in them from the Indianapolis 500 but actually had the stars here and did some filming at the track. Then I saw the movie posters associated with the films and as a collector I was now hooked on movie posters with auto racing themes. And now I'm here to discuss and learn. Ed

Evening,

Hope I am doing this right, and added to the introduce yourself thread and didn't start a totally new one.....

Anywho,

My name is Neil Duty, I am a 63 year old collector who collects Comic Books, Non Sports Cards, Sports Cards, Rare First Edition Hardcover books, some other misc things and 1960-2000 Horror Movie and Sci-Fi Posters. Mainly in my Poster collecting realm are 1960's SCI-FI, and 1975-1990 Horror Movies Posters, Anything with Boobs and Blood and I'm all over it!

My two White Whale acquisitions I hope to do soon are 1962 Herk Hervey's "Carnival Of Souls". This Poster is seen on E-Bay but the asking is way to high, especially when I have traced down 5 copies, most sitting on Virtual shelves for years! The second is a 1987 "Sorority Babes In The Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama". I know this Poster exists as I've seen it twice on E-Bay, but for reasons at the time I didn't pull the trigger!

What's the easiest way to Post Pictures on here?

Thanks

Neil

Our hosting company recently switched our site over to a different server. It appears that the DNS information they gave me months back had since changed. The site was pointing to this first set of information and this may have resulted in a period of downtime. I just now switched our DNS over to a new IP they provided last week. I'm sorry this happened as I thought I had it taken care of. We should be good to go now...

Charlie

Everyone one this forum has what is called a "Rank". So basically when you join you'll see next to your avatar and handle (name), you'll have a rank. Eg Mexican Lobby Card, One sheeter, Daybiller, Three sheeter, Elite Collector and Grande 2P. Based on how many posts you have.

You'll have noticed that Paul is the Quad Master. Dario is the Restoration Yoda. Rich is the Tea Lady. Charlie is the Game Master. These are roles we hand out for fun. Based on either expertise or taking the piss. Sorry Rich.

So that said. If you have any suggestions for yourself OR someone else. We'd like to know. You can have up to 2 roles. 1 of Expertise and 1 of "Taking the piss"

Happy New Year!

As we head into the new year one of our founding members David has asked to step back into a very limited role with the forum. We have discussed this among the "Amigos" and although we are sad to see him move away from a leadership role, we understand his reasoning and wish him the best. I doubt he will really be able to keep himself away... Matt and I will of course stay on far into our old age...

This led us to seek a new third "Amigo" and after some careful deliberation and discussing what type of member and personality is needed to remain fair and balanced, we found that one member stood out.

So as we move into the New Year, Matt and I are excited to announce that Mark aka Eisenhower has been asked to become a moderator/admin and he has agreed!

And although we know no one will ever replace David, we look forward to the future with Mark and hope all the members will welcome and support him in his new role!

Congratulations Mark!

Hi All,

I'm completely new here but have been scanning the forum and it looks absolutely amazing. I feel way out of my depth!

I'm looking for something particular, an original poster for the movie 'Sideways' (2004) with Paul Giamatti.

Does anyone know where I can even begin to look for this via the UK?

Or do any members perhaps have a copy for sale?

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this!

Tom

Hello all!!!

I was recently gifted a huge lot of movie posters from my dads friend. He owned a video store and literally kept every poster he was ever sent. Starts in the late 70's and goes up until 2010 when he sold the store.

Any help from the forum would be greatly appreciated. I have 3 main questions.

Are video store posters worth much?

i was reading that it is the ones in the theatre that catch a big price. These were all sent to the store free for promotional use.

next question.

How should I store them?

They are all rolled up with about 10 in each. He had them stored upright when I collected them. I feel this will damage the edges and am thinking I should put them on their side. i would love to tube each of them but from my estimation there are probably 7000 of them there and that's a heck of a lot of tubs lol.

Last question

if movie store posters are worth anything, should I sell them as a lot or individually?

i will definetly pick out some of my fave movies to keep but the sheer number is a bit overwhelming. There are a ton of titles I don't know and I have no idea how to appraise them.

thank you for any input you may have for this new to poster collecting noob.
