I Love a Mystery Columbia Series ( 1945 - 1946 )

The I Love a Mystery Columbia series. Original U.S.A. one sheet images for each of the three titles in this series, with these being I Love a Mystery ( 1945 ), The Devil's Mask ( 1946 ) & The Unknown ( 1946 ). The three films were based on an original radio program titled I Love a Mystery.

The Devil's Mask is the only one of the three titles that I was able to locate an image of. Does anyone have any daybill images of either or both I Love a Mystery and The Unknown ?

These Columbia Pictures film series were based on using the same character/s or themes and are following on the heels of the earlier presented RKO Pictures series which had met with mixed responses. As the first in these new Columbia Pictures series presentations, The Whistler has proved to be a major disappointment after all the work and research that went into it, with no responses received and also little in the way of viewings happening. Seeing that I had the I Love A Mystery thread completed and sitting in my drafts folder, and after some considerable time was spent time on it also, there is no point in letting it go unseen. Future planned series titles from Columbia Pictures, followed by other studios series, will not now eventuate.

Mexican Spitfire RKO film series ( 1939 -1943) known Australian daybills so far.

The remaining five films from the series that I am seeking daybill images of are -

The Girl From Mexico ( 1939 )
Mexican Spitfire ( 1940 )
Mexican Spitfire Out West ( 1940 )
Mexican Spitfire's Baby ( 1941 )
Mexican Spitfire's Baby ( 1942 ) Bruce sold two daybills of this title in 1994 and 1995 and I found out today from Matt the images after a search cannot be located.

A long shot I know, but if anyone has any images of these titles they are welcome here.

An observation of mine regarding the Mexican Spitfire At Sea daybill, is that the Lupe Velez image looks more like Susan Hayward than Lupe.

Lupe Velez on the poster image, then the real life Lupe and then Susan Hayward. It it just me thinking this ? Have a close look at Lupe's images that appear on the other two daybills and you will see a better resemblance there.

I am going to take a break for a while from my plans of introducing as many that I can find images of for 1930s - 1940's RKO movie series, including Dick Tracy and Gildersleeve.

Tarzan RKO Series ( 1943 - 1955 ) Australian Daybills

There were twelve Tarzan films released during 1943 - 1955 by RKO Radio.

The titles of the ten Simmons printed daybill images appearing above and release dates are -

I though I would include a Tarzan stock poster printed by F. Cunninghame for RKO that was used in this case for Tarzan's Peril.

A very good result in having ten out of the twelve original daybills that were printed available to view.

I love the tagline from this Australian newspaper advertisement placed for Tarzan And The Amazons in 1946.

and Tarzan's Hidden Jungle ( 1955 ) The final Tarzan film released by RKO.

I thought also I would include the one sheet images of Tarzan And The Huntress and Tarzan And The Leopard Woman that I had found.

Australian ad block images of Tarzan And The Mermaids one sheet and also the three sheet displayed as well, so you can see what they look like. Anyone with any of the missing one sheet or three sheet Tarzan RKO Australian poster images I would very much like to see them.

This unidentified country of origin trade advertisement from the 1940's indicates just how popular the Tarzan series were during that decade.

For anyone who enjoyed the beautiful full bleed Simmons Tarzan RKO daybills displayed on this thread, and possibly haven't yet looked at my previous daybill threads of The Falcon, The Saint, Dick Tracy, Mexican Spitfire, The Great Gildersleeve and Scattergpood Baines RKO series, along with the the the RKO Val Lewton titles, I recommend all these Simmons full bleed image threads are worth a visit.

Coming soon some Columbia Pictures film series threads, featuring known daybill images, starting with The Whistler series, which starred Richard Dix, appearing below in Mysterious Intruder from the series. The daybill images this time round to be featured, are from the great printer W.E.Smith.

Columbia Pictures made a good number of film series, mainly throughout the 1940's, including Boston Blackie, Crime Doctor, Bulldog Drummond and The Lone Wolf. Unfortunately daybill images are hard to find but I am still searching for them. Some images are available and I hope to present some of these series at some time in the future.

Boston Blackie Columbia Pictures Series ( 1941 - 1949 ) Australian Posters

There were fourteen Boston Blackie films released by Columbia Pictures from 1941 through to 1949. All the films in the series starred Chester Morris as Boston Blackie. The fourteen films U.S.A. one sheet images and film titles appear above.

Australian daybill and one sheet film posters for Bostin Blackie titles are extremely hard to locate. I have only been only able to find the following three daybills and only a single one sheet image.

There were seven Ellery Queen films released by Columbia Pictures from 1940 to 1942. The first four starred Ralph Bellamy as Ellery Queen , then the remaining three had William Gargan playing the role.

As with the other Columbia pictures series, Australian film posters are hard to locate. This has been the most difficult so far of the Columbia Pictures series that I have featured here on the forum to find posters of. Of the seven titles not a single daybill image has been located, and one only Australian one sheet has come to light. The title being Enemy Agents Meet Ellery Queen ( 1942 ) and the last one in the series. This image I only accidentally came across. It was sold in a bulk lot of five posters, and as as such the title isn't listed individually on Bruce's website. I understand the reason behind this practice, but it certainly makes my research into tracking down film titles a little harder to achieve. On saying that I do like a challenge though,

Does anyone per chance have any Australian daybill, one sheet or an extremely unlikely to exist today three sheet images of the series entries that they can share with us here? Low expectation but one never knows.

Dick Tracy RKO Series ( 1945 - 1947 ) Australian daybills

Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome ( 1947 ).

This is the only daybill image that I have sighted so far from the Dick Tracy RKO Film Series ( 1945 -1947 ), which consisted of four films.

The three remaining titles that I would like to see the missing daybill images of are as follows -

The Great Gildersleeve & Scattergood Baines RKO Series ( 1941- 1944 ) Australian Daybills

Gildersleeve's Ghost ( 1944 ), Scattergood Survives A Murder ( 1942 ) & Scattergood Rides High ( 1942 ) Australian daybills.

These are the only daybill images found for the RKO film series The Great Gildersleeve ( 1942 - 1943 ) and Scattergood Baines ( 1941 -1943 ).

The Great Gildersleeve series consisted of four films. The missing three film images are from the following titles -
The Great Gildersleeve ( 1942 ), Gildersleeve's Bad Day ( 1943 ) & Gildersleeve On Broadway ( 1943 ).

Scattergood Baines series was made up of six films and the missing four film images are as follows - Scattergood Baines ( 1941 ), Scattergood Pulls The
Strings ( 1941 ), Scattergood Meets Broadway ( 1941 ) and Cinderella Swings It ( originally to be titled Scattergood Swings It ) ( 1944 ).

If anyone has any images of the missing seven daybills originally produced for the two series entries please share them here?

A mention here that two other RKO series that I had hoped originally to have presented won't be happening, as no daybill images could be located. The two series are Dr, Christian ( 6 films 1939 - 1941 ) and Lum And Abner ( 6 films 1940-1946 ).

Something that registers with me more and more over the years is the great number of missing daybill ( and all other Australian poster material ) images, pre 1950 that are missing. The more minor the film, the more unlikely it appears that Australian posters are likely to turn up. It seems as if these minor titles were discarded over many years due to being thought of as being of little or no value.

Worth while mentioning here is that there was another Saint film made ten years later after the last official RKO series entry.It was titled The Saint's Return ( 1953 ) made by Hammer Films and released in the UK by Exclusive films and Independent film Distributors ( IFD ) here in Australia.The only connection with RKO is that the film was released in the USA only by RKO under the new title of The Saint's Girl Friday.

The Whistler Columbia Film Series ( 1944 - 1948 } Australian daybills

The Whistler ( 1944 ), The Mark Of The Whistler ( 1944 ), Mysterious Intruder ( 1946 ) & The Return Of The Whistler ( 1948 ).

There were eight titles released in The Whistler film series ( 1944 - 1948 ) from Columbia Pictures and the above four daybills are the ones that I had located daybill images of.

To the best of my knowledge the following titles are missing daybill images.

The Australian daybill image of Richard Dix above from The Whistler has always amused me as it looks nothing like Richard Dix.The hairstyle I have always found odd. All the Australian poster artist At W.E.Smith had to do was copy the U.S. insert image of Richard Dix appearing above on the right, and the best they could do was this?

Using images of men's violence against women to sell your crappy comics movie? Well, the internet will let you know that's not on.

A billboard ad for 20th Century Fox's X-Men: Apocalypse, showing Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique being held in a chokehold by the film's villain Apocalypse (played by Oscar Isaac), is drawing criticism online for exploiting and trivialising the very real issue of violence against women.

Actress Rose McGowan was among those calling for the offensive ad to be pulled.

"There is a major problem when the men and women at 20th Century Fox think casual violence against women is the way to market a film," McGowan wrote in a Facebook post.

"The fact that no one flagged this is offensive and frankly stupid. The geniuses behind this, and I use that term lightly, need to take a long hard look at the mirror and see how they are contributing to society. Imagine if it were a black man being strangled by a white man, or a gay male being strangled by a hetero? The outcry would be enormous.

"So let's right this wrong. 20th Century Fox, since you can't manage to put any women directors on your slate for the next two years, how about you at least replace your ad?," she wrote.

"Mutant politics and superpowers aside, what we have here is a naked woman being choked by a man three times her size," The Mary Jane wrote, noting that the image's context in the film is irrelevant.

"The argument that it shouldn't be offensive because they are mutants doesn't hold any water," Jennifer McCleary-Sills from the International Center for Research on Women added in a comment to The Hollywood Reporter.

"What really is the challenge here is the intentionality of it. You could have chosen any from the thousands of images, but you chose this one. Whose attention did you want to get and to what end?"

To be honest, I've seen the film and it was so tedious that I hardly even remember this scene, a blip in the movie's final battle magnified to billboard-size for a lousy marketing attention-grab at the expense of social responsibility towards victims of violent abuse.

The film, which topped the Australian box office last week with an opening $4.6 million pull, hasn't been a stranger to controversy since its release: reviewers also previously slammed an awkwardly pointless scene that takes place at Auschwitz, calling it "appalling", "tasteless" and "deeply uncomfortable".
