Over a 19 year span, starting in 1990, I published 43 full color movie poster books (19 of these contained images of posters which were sold in my 19 annual "major" auctions) . The non-auction books were created with the great assistance of legendary poster collector Richard Allen.

All are sold out, and have been for years. But you can view all of them online at no cost! You see a gallery of all the images from each book, with each individual image linking to a description of that movie, and a link to a much larger image of that poster.

One of these was War Movie Posters, filled with 297 posters from every sort of war, with the greatest emphasis on World War II movies. See them all at http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/publication/War%20Movie%20Posters/sort/1/archive.html

See all the contents of every one of the 43 books through the links on this page: http://www.emovieposter.com/imagearchive/bookguide.php

Trove has some in their archive, but I didn't see any that were digitised.
Not sure of the full range, but probably in print from the 1920s to 1950s. The title had some subtle changes over the years.
This is Ves's collection with articles and adverts related to Aussie films.

Just found this email from 2015:

You are receiving this email because you bought credits for MoviePosterDB
in the past and we have some news about the website. Since 2007, the
website is run by us together. In the past couple of years, however, our
views on how to proceed have unfortunately drifted apart. After long
consideration we've therefore decided to split ways and both continue
with our own movie poster website.

 jayef will relaunch MoviePosterDB in
the coming months, whereas Martijn will start CineMaterial.com. Both
websites will host all images that were previously uploaded to MoviePosterDB.com, and if you have any credits left they'll remain valid on both websites.

Two of the advantages of CineMaterial are that poster
collections can be filtered on type, language and resolution, and that
images can be previewed in full resolution before downloading and
spending credits.

 jayef & Martijn
*****

MoviePosterDB is now down

Hey guys!

Just started wading through the information available here: https://www.legislation.gov.au/Content/HistoricGazettes

You can find notes about films passed for exhibition by month and year. I've just been browsing and it's been great to see what other posters may be out there! For example, the August 1974 Gazette mentions 5 movies that I wasn't sure had Aussie paper, but can reasonably assume now that they do. The same Gazette also informs us that the original 'Deep Throat' was rejected again by the Board, as was 'The Devil in Miss Jones'. AND in another section it tells us that 'Nothing But The Night' (which was passed in Dec 1972) has now been renamed 'Castle of the Living Dead'.

I recommend having a look...and I make no apologies if it causes your want list to swell!

Ok, so in light of our recent discussions, two things about Bruce's auction history jump out at me.

1. We all value it as a huge resource, not only for the images, but also for the auction history results.

2. The retrospective changing of auction details to show new information brought to light on a particular title.

Now, I am not talking about while an auction is running, and someone sends emovie an email or whatever bringing to their attention something they believe to be listed incorrectly. I haven no issue with this.

I am talking about the complete wipeout of the past auction history details for a title.

This could be because that title was either thought to be an original, but is now known and accepted to be a re-release (or vice versa), or the movie for which the poster was thought to be advertising is now deemed to be something else eg. Castle of Living Dead.

So if a poster was auctioned say 5 years ago as an original release, and got a final sale price of say $300, the auction results have reflected that.

Now in the next auction the same poster is up for auction, but it is brought to emovies attention that, hang on it's actually a re-release, for reasons ABC, this auction will now end and be recorded accurately because the details are amended prior to its completion. This one sells for say $150.

Unfortunately, (I think) the auction details from 5 years ago are also changed to say it was a re-release. This means that this auction is now no longer a true reflection of THIS auctions history.

So when I am looking at the auction history of this particular piece, it brings up two auction histories with quite a difference in the final sale price, but because the details of the auction 5 years ago are changed, I have no idea that it was actually incorrectly at the time (because that was all that was known then) listed as original, which would account for the difference in final value.

I think it would be much better to just make an amendment by adding a paragraph or something which stands out, to advise people that since that auction ended, we now know it is a re-release. The correct information on the title will be present, and a true representation of the auction also remains.

Thoughts?

Not sure if Bruce posts here, but would love to hear from him obviously....

I bought a 1961 copy of "Film Daily - The Yearbook of Motion Pictures" out of curiosity. I wanted to see what was inside.

Well, I discovered there is so much information in each one of these. Theater counts for every country, locations of theaters, every major studio, it lists all the NSS office locations, managers, and store front addresses.

Every film released for that year. I was hoping to find re-releases but did not (yet)... I'll post some pictures tonight.

I also bought a lot of magazines including "Boxoffice", "International Motion Picture Exhibitor", and "Motion Picture Herald". Will see what they have and report back...

If you somehow don't know (and regularly visit) our Auction History Database at http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/archive.html then you need to go one time, because you will quickly join the tens of thousands of others who go there ALL the
time! It is 100% free, and you don't have to register to see the images
or sales results, and it is completely "sort-able" and "search-able" in
every way!

We have just added our ONE MILLIONTH record! This doesn't mean one million auctions, because the database contains all the images from our 43 books, the Hershenson/Allen Archive,
plus the fixed priced items from our website and our 1990s sales lists,
but it does contain around 921,000 actual auction results. Unlike other
databases, EVERY single result is an actual result, where the
consignor of that poster was paid for it, in cash. No sales that "fell
through", were canceled, prices that were "re-negotiated", etc, etc, (we
collect on 99% of our auctions, and on the few where we don't, those
results are dropped from the database and the item is re-auctioned and
entered after the new sale is paid for).

And because we have auctioned so many items (many times more than ANY other movie paper auction, by a VERY wide
margin), you can do what so many dealers and potential buyers do, which
is to use it to get a good sense of what you might buy or sell each
poster for. On lots and lots of specific posters we have auctioned them
ten or twenty or more times, so you can see the "range" that item has
sold for over a LOT of sales. And on those titles where we have
only sold them one or two times (or none at all, on an ever-shrinking
number of items) then you can know for sure that is a very rare item,
and incorporate that info into your pricing decision. None of these
prices are "guessed at", as they are in any "price guide"! They are
actual prices paid, and the result of two bidders bidding against each
other, not one bidder against a "reserve".

"Only"
915,000+ of the the one million records have images of the items. Why?
Because the vast majority of the missing images are from auctions from
1999 to 2003. At that time we did not have a perfect method of assigning
specific names to images, so while we DO have those images, it can be difficult to assign the right image to the right auction. On some of them we CAN determine
which belongs to which auction, and on others we can only make a very
educated guess, so we are in the process of adding those images back in,
and on the ones where we are not 100% sure the images are correct, we
add "this may be a stock image" to that image.

As
you might imagine, this is a massive project, but we began it some
months ago, when we had around 120,000 "missing" images, and we have
added back in around 35,000 of them, and we have 85,000 to go, and we
will continue to work at it (in our "spare" time) until finally EVERY one
of the million records has its image attached! Remember that these are
solely images from before 2004. Every record from that point on has the
image of the actual item that was auctioned in that auction (because we NEVER use "stock" images on our auctions)!

At some point in the future we may add a "Pay" section to this massive database, but until that time, this Auction History Database at http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/archive.html
is completely free, so be sure to bookmark it and visit whenever you
want to see an image (or know an item's value), but be aware that it can
be very addicting, and you may find yourself spending lots of time
there!
