Total steal!

What’s interesting: Heritage originally listed it as a **1968 Original**, then changed the description to **MGM R-1971**.

On the white credit strip at the bottom you can see the printed NSS code **“68/103”** – it’s pretty faint to the naked eye, so I ran a quick Photoshop curves adjustment to make it pop. Right next to it is the red reissue stamp **“74 294”**.

After digging around, here’s what I found:

The code 68/103 matches every confirmed first-run 1968 McCall printing (including other formats). The “74 294” stamp is a standard NSS reissue mark used for the 1974 re-release. So it looks like genuine 1968 original paper that was simply reused in 1974 – a true “reused original.”

Now I’m curious what the community thinks:

Does this count as a **1968 Original with reissue stamp** in your book, or is it still just an R-1971? Has anyone seen similar cases with other titles?

Would love your opinions and especially photos of comparable copies!

Thanks in advance!

2001-a-space-odyssey

robert-mccall

40x60-poster

1968-original

r-1971-reissue

nss-68-103

reissue-stamp

heritage-auctions

vintage-movie-poster

scifi-poster

stanley-kubrick

reused-original

mccall-artwork

bus-stop-size

Hello everyone!

I’m a newbie to the board but I've been collecting posters for decades, and I’m excited to join this community! I have a passion for early film & advertising posters, especially stone lithos, and even more so, for early posters printed by Morgan Litho of Cleveland.

My collection has been in storage for a long time and I recently photographed it all.
There are many gems but one poster, a half sheet, has always piqued my curiosity. As far as I know, it’s the only surviving copy of a US poster for “Homers Odyssey” (L'Odissea 1911) from 1912.

What's made this a curiosity is the suspicion that this may be one of the earliest, if not the earliest, surviving example of a movie poster prominently featuring a monster or creature. In my research I found that posters exist for Georges Méliès "The House of the Devil " (1896) and "L'Inferno" (1911), but in both cases the monsters depicted are ghosts or demons and thus theological or spiritual in nature, as opposed to the biological grounding of the giant Cyclops, which places this poster for Homer's Odyssey more in line with the likes of King Kong, Godzilla, The Lost World, etc., ie a "Creature Feature" (while The Odyssey as a story wouldn't be categorized as such, the poster for the film is advertising/presenting the film in this way). The only other piece of early movie monster ephemera I’m aware of is a trade catalog for the 1910 silent film adaptation of "Frankenstein" by Georges Méliès, which of course isn't a film poster.
Are there any examples of movie posters depicting a (non theological) monster or creature that predates this 1912 poster for Homer's Odyssey**/**L'Odissea (1911)? Or is this the earliest surviving instance of such a poster?

I look forward to the years of passion and expertise that might weigh in on this fabulous poster!

Thanks so much!

Ralph C.

P.S. if this should be posted in the “General Discussion” section plmk

It's the only proof that a 24sh ever existed. From a purely historical perspective, this photo thereby becomes the 24-sh. One could argue that, at least. I snagged it for a measly $109 including Buyer’s Premium.

But the crucial question: What do I write in the "Value of the Item" field?

I think most of the people who bid that day didn't realize what they had in front of them. They just saw something black and white, and Robby has to be colorful. :-) I haven't found anything similar anywhere. The thing is extremely rare, as far as my research goes—it's probably the only one of its kind. It's a classic archive photo, even with a handwritten archive signature in the bottom right of the image. There were always only very few of those. To get more insight into its historical and photographic context, I've reached out to institutions like the George Eastman Museum and asked for their assessment on studio practices from the 1950s. I'm wating for the answer.

What do you think of this haul?

In the image you can see my small specialist library — mostly first editions. These books helped me quickly develop a sense for what’s genuinely desirable (and what isn’t). The single most helpful one for me was “Learn More About Movie Posters.” A couple of Hammer-related books are missing from the photo.

I’m not an old hand like many of you here. I can’t look back on 20+ years of collecting experience or claim I can grade posters by smell alone — you know what I mean.

I’ve only been actively collecting for about three months and, admittedly, I’ve spent quite a bit in a short time to build what I think is already a fairly respectable collection. My goal is to buy posters I truly like — with a realistic chance of being value-stable (and ideally appreciating) over the mid to long term. Call it my personal inflation hedge, but collecting still comes first.

As I said, I’m not an old hand. But I’m not clueless either (unless you ask my wife — she has very different views on posters than I do).

I use AI for many things. For example, I let ChatGPT translate posts like this into English after I’ve written them (my English is fine, but nowhere near my native German).

I also use both Grok and ChatGPT for poster grading (prompt below). I sometimes use AI to suggest a ballpark hammer-price range for auctions as well. That said: you have to be careful. AI isn’t equipped with the human senses that affect what we personally find attractive, and it can be confidently wrong. Taste varies wildly, and the factors that separate a great poster from a mediocre one are complex.

AI makes mistakes, but it does provide a direction and helps me structure my thinking. I never take the output as fact — I always challenge it.

My takeaway so far: ChatGPT tends to give more realistic and balanced lot evaluations than Grok (at least with my prompts). But maybe I still haven’t found the perfect prompt.

How about you — do you use AI in your collecting?

Up until I joined VMPFI was only aware of one duotone RKO daybill and this being Cry Danger. Ves posted a duotone Marchant Joan Of Paris and David posted a The Fallen Sparrow today. This now makes three I am aware of.

Does anyone have any other examples they can post on this thread and if so It would be very appreciated.

Hondo

Hello everyone
Hope all is well and safe.
I was wondering if anyone could help me with some info re Godfather Red Face design.
I know the the puppeteer's hand was designed by Neil Fujita, which was originally designed for the novel's cover. But does anyone know who designed the red face itself. All the info I have seen credit the poster to Neil Fujita but not if they are just repeating info re the Puppeteers hand. Also I understand this was designed in the UK for foreign markets.

Also I am writing this with a heavy heart as after looking for a good copy for a long time and having found one , I have now ended up with botched linen backing job ( by a so called professional who insists it a perfect job). Ripples all over, some bubbling and at least two tears on the poster that weren't there before.
Thanks
Mani

The first film to be covered is the 1968 Japanese film Koya No Toseinin known in English speaking countries as The Drifting Avenger. Although filmed in Australia this film was not theatrically released in Australia. Produced by the Toei Corporation using an entire Japanese crew it was filmed in the Tamworth district as well as in Nundle and at the Goonoo Goonoo station N.S.W.

The film starred legendary Japanese actor Ken Takakura best known in the west for his roles in The Yakusa ( 1974 ) and Black Rain ( 1989 ). Although the film was produced for Japanese audiences the majority of the other actors appearing in the film were Australian.

Advertisement placed for the Toyo Theatre in Honolulu, HawaII screenings

A scene fron the movie featuring from right to left Ken Takakura, Ken Goodlet and Judith Roberts.

Judith Roberts pictured above appeared occasionally in the Australian soap opera Neighbors between 1985 and 2001. She has had many screen credits on television and in film starting in 1964 and with the last one recorded in 2020.

Koya No Toseinin, or The Drifting Avenger,
is a 1968 revenge tale starring legendary Japanese actor Ken Takakura. The
story is set in America during the cowboy era and follows the son of a former
samurai on a mission to avenge his parents after they are killed by stagecoach
robbers. ( NFSA ).

Seeing the film is set in America I find it odd that the following two posters. one in Japanese and a similar design in English have an image of Australia appearing on them.

I am in the process of framing my original movie posters and am onto figuring out how to properly mat.

What's the best way to go about matting posters that don't have lots of white space on the borders or empty space to play with? For example the white border on this Star Wars poster lets the mat overlap onto the poster without losing any of the poster's image. I have a lot of posters without white borders so I'm not sure how to mat them, any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hey, I'm new to this forum and was wondering if this acid-free paper would be sufficient to be used as backing for some relatively low value ($50-$200) original one sheet movie posters. I was planning on putting the paper over either foam core or cardboard, is this a good idea and what sort of adhesive would be suitable to sit the paper on the backboard. One last thing, is this type of tape suitable for attaching one sheets to the paper I plan to buy if I use it in a double sided manner underneath the poster. If you have any better solutions to framing one sheets that doesn't involve buying mat boards (they're way too expensive) I'd love to hear them.

I am just getting into collecting original movie posters alongside DIY framing. Looking forward to any help and interacting in this forum!

"Yes, Arabic posters can be rather difficult to identify! Luckily,
Google and/or Bing image search is able to find many of them (it
usually requires translating the information on the pages). However, we
still have to consult with experts for some of the more obscure
posters."

He re-replied: "Yes, Google and Bing are good on
reverse image searches. I've also found that Yandex (the Russian
"Google") is also particularly good and seems to have spider-crawled
more Arabic sites than Google or Bing; Yandex can sometimes find a hit
that the other search engines miss. Here is a link to a site that you
can upload an image and it will do the reverse image search on all
three: Google, Bing, and Yandex: https://www.prepostseo.com/reverse-image-search."

And THIS is part of the "secret" to how we are able to identify so many
obscure posters from every corner of the globe, week in and week out!
What do I mean?

Part of it is that we have found lots and lots
of websites (from the U.S. and all other countries) that have tons of
data on obscure movies and posters. Many of these are very specialized
to a single country, genre, film or star.

Part of it is that we
have dozens of people like the above person who emailed us who
regularly scan over our auctions and who send us corrections or
additional information about current auctions (and also on ones from our
Auction History). Many of these people are very specialized to a single
country, genre, film or star, and that is fine! Say a person is an
expert on James Stewart. They likely have a saved search for James
Stewart items, and while they are looking at them, they will tell us of
any errors we have made.

And the biggest part of our being able
to identify so many obscure posters from every corner of the globe,
week in and week out is that we have saved databases with ALL the past
information we have previously uncovered in our research, so we always
start out with information on all those items we auctioned before, and
we mostly only have to research items we have NOT auctioned before.

This is purely a "labor of love" with us! We COULD simply present the
name of the poster and take our best guess on the year, but we very much
want our auctions to have an educational function as well, which is why
we do lots of research every week, including on lots of posters from
obscure movies that might well sell for very little!

Please
consider becoming one of the many people who help us! The next time YOU
are scanning over our auctions, and you see ANY kind of error (or
omission) of ANY kind, please take a moment to click on the "Ask a
Question" link on that page, and then tell us what is wrong, and we will
quickly correct it.

With everyone pitching in, and with tons
of hard work on our part, our Auction History can become the most
accurate movie poster (and movies in general) source to be found
anywhere on the Internet! Thanks very, very much to all those who have
helped us in the past.
Ftzpatrick's Traveltalks series released by MGM. Newspaper coverage above from Sydney December 1938 and Katoomba January 1939.

I thought Australian members may be interested in being made aware of this film and that there was an Australian one sheet printed for this title. At a Christies auction held in Melbourne on the 20th February 1994, titled ''Movie Posters Including The Bill Collins Collection Part 11, a copy of this poster sold for $300. Sorry there wasn't an image included in the catalogue. The estimate in the catalogue was $150-$180 and sold for $300. Twenty four years on if it were to be offered for sale again it would have to attract a much higher price due to its rarity.
