First of a series of rare Australian printed posters of films that were made in Australia. A daybill of unknown length. Note no blank white section at the top of the poster. I am sure the poster is from the original and only release in Australia in 1938 and the top of the poster has been trimmed. Only image I have ever seen of this title.

The U.S. taglines were apparently deemed too strong for Australia, along with the gorilla holding the woman scene. Odd Australian taglines.

The 1960's duotone poster had a different looking gorilla than the one appearing on the original U.S. poster image shown above. This image below is an actual photograph of the gorilla as he appears in the film. On the duotone daybill there is still no woman in the gorilla's arms. The duotone images were copied from U.S. material such as the half sheet shown below where a different looking second gorilla was depicted.

One is I believe is to to be the first image sighted of a serial film. Following are the best images of three of the films that I have been able to identify and to locate U.S.A. material for these rare titles, just to give you an idea on some details regarding the films.

The Make-Believe Wife ( 1918 ) starring Billie Burke who we all know and fondly remember as playing Glinda in The Wizard Of Oz ( 1939 ).

The Mystery Girl ( 1918 ) and The Silent Mystery ( 1918 ) a very early serial from the first decade of serials.

All nice artwork. One can understand America changing the title, but one wonders why it was necessary to alter the name again for Australia, instead of just using what seems a perfectly good title in Enemy From Space. Keep in mind as well that the Australian censors detested monsters in any shape or form, so the Enemy From Space title would have been, one would have thought, the way to have gone.

The stock poster adapted the original The Daltons Ride Again artwork that was used on the title lobby card, and also the U.S. half sheet as well. The Forty Thousand Horsemen stock daybill would have been printed sometime around or after March 1946 when The Daltons Ride Again was released in Australia and before Universal became Universal-International in 1946. This has to date the Forty Thousand Horseman daybill as being a 1946 printing. The stock poster was used again in the 1950's for Kansas Raiders and Border River second printings. The Kansas Raiders daybill image is always credited incorrectly as being an original release poster. The original Australian daybill, yet unsited, would most likely look something like the following U.S.A. insert and the Australian one sheet.

Does anyone have any other examples of the Universal western stock poster ?

Very few 20th Century Fox 1945 releases had the anniversary logo applied to the film posters, and in some cases with individual films, the special logo was not used on every poster style, e.g. Where Do We Go From Here? shown above with the normal logo as well. For the record the films appearing above are A Royal Scandal, A Tree Grows In Brooklyn, Diamond Horseshoe and Where Do We Go From Here ? If anyone has other examples of the anniversary logo please let us see them ?

The poster was again printed in Australia by Robert Burton. Two are immediately known to the person viewing but the other two aren't. There is an obvious clue to narrow down the year. Sorry the image is so dark but that shouldn't stop anyone working out the titles as I successfully managed to do so. The posters are on the wall in glass displays. Good luck.

It appears the Who'll Stop The Rain daybill would have been the one printed for the Australian first release. The Dog Soldiers top right poster being the M.A.P.S. version printed for New Zealand distribution, just altering the title and leaving off the Australian censorship rating and the top left poster being an alternative New Zealand poster also printed for this film.

Chromo Print. The duotone image is taken off a 2nd printing completed between 1960 and 1962 by Advertising & Commercial. A definite decline in the artwork. The smaller secondary image above appearing on the duotone is even worse by turning the ugly woman into a male Robert Stack lookalike. I spared you the pigeon image. It appears to me the majority of duotone printed posters by any of the Australian printers were assigned to the B team of artists.
