I have been finding quite a few odd size Australian posters in some of the collections I have picked up recently. An example is this Valachi Papers poster measuring approx. 13" x 23". Different daybills and one sheets were also issued for this film but this poster has rarely if ever been seen. Just curious as to what other odd size Australian posters others have seen.

Do you ever regret you didn't purchase some great posters years ago for prices that by todays standard were ridiculously low prices?

On the 7th of November, 1998 I attended an Auction titled Museum Collection / Major Auction of Mechanical Music at Pickles Auctions in the Sydney, NSW, Australian suburb of Moorebank. The auction was listed as - ''Under instructions from Tom and Chris Coxall due to the closure of their museum in Lynoch, South Aust. and transported to Sydney for Auction, and other vendors''.

Included in this Auction were 66 titles with multiples of some titles making a total of 113 posters. There were 112 Australian one sheets and one daybill,,this being East Lynne. The posters dated from 1927 to 1932 but mostly from 1930 and 1931.The posters weren't in great condition but there were some great titles among them. To wet your appetite some of the posters up for auction were Pardon Us ( Laurel And Hardy ) x 3, City Streets x 2, Dishonored X 1, Check And Double Check X 1, A Free Soul X 1, Palmy Days ( Eddie Cantor with a few different designs ) X 9, Rio Rita x 1, The Light Of Western Stars X 1, The Cisco Kid X 2 & Blackmail X 1 ( Hitchcock - marked poor condition in catalogue).

I checked out the posters on display before the auction and marked down the titles that were in fair to good condition that I would bid on.I bid on them but ended up with only four titles for the amount I had decided on. Would you believe $5? There were so many great titles I should have bid higher for that I could have had restored. Looking at the value of titles such as Pardon Us today I could kick myself that I hadn't bid highter to obtain some classic titles.

Anyone have any similar experiences?

Hondo.

I think it might be a partial 3 sheet as it measures approx 40" x 60" and I am guessing that it might be for Raymond Longfords 1923 film Australia Calls but very difficult to be sure.

Sven on the An American In Paris thread has made a great suggestion that we should start a separate thread on first release daybills that had two different designs. Three BEF daybills have been mentioned and these being North West Frontier, Robbery Under Arms and Reach For The Sky.

I mentioned on the other thread there were many Richardson / Paramount titles from the 1920's through to the 1950's that fall into this category. I have a list of those I am aware of. I also mentioned that there have been many daybills over the years where two different styles were sold as both being original when one was a re-release. Some examples are ---

Planet Of The Apes

North By Northwest

Butterfield 8

Africa Screams

Cat On A Hot Tin Roof

The Outlaw

This sort of subject is right up my alley so let's clear up a few misconceptions about some daybills. If you have any daybills with two different designs that you believe are both first release let me know the titles or better still post the images.

Hondo

Earthquake ( 1974 ) has two versions of the same design but with a few minor colour alterations including the NRC rating. CIC release posters with one being printed by MAPS and the other uncredited.

Escape From Alcatraz ( 1979 has two versions exactly the same except for the colour. CIC releases with one printed by MAPS and one Robert Burton.

Airport '80 The Concorde ( 1979 has two versions exactly the same except for different colour usage and different censorship ratings. The MAPS version has a M rating and the Robert Burton one has a NRC rating. The film was originally given a NRC rating by the Australian Commonwealth censor in August 1979 and no amendments to this classification found. This means the Robert Burton version has the correct classification rating on it and MAPS version has the incorrect rating. CIC releases.

Jaws ( 1975 ) as mentioned on another thread recently has two versions of the same daybill with different coloured censorship classification ratings. CIC releases and both printed by MAPS.

There are other examples of similar printings also but the most interesting fact to come out of this is all the examples are from daybill posters from CIC.

One could ask the question of which poster was printed first and we will most likely never know but I intend to post an example shortly where I believe I will be able to prove that a daybill of exactly the same design was printed first by MAPS then later by Robert Burton using the exact original MAPS material.

It appears this Australian documentary feature had a screening in Australia in 1943, but it was 1945 before this over two hour film gained a wider release in Australian. A little known film today, it covers the history of the Australian forces in the Second World War from 1939 to 1943, covering the principal campaigns in which they fought and utilising contemporary footage. I am hoping to obtain an image of a poster printed for the release sometime later this year.

I am curious, as I cannot recollect ever seeing any other MGM Australian one sheets printed in this style. Both, it appears to me would have been printed by the same unknown printer and both are minus the MGM logo used at that period of time.
